Highlights
  • Jvari Church - Our tour begins at the Jvari Monastery, an ancient temple dating back to the 6th century, near the historic capital of Mtskheta. Perched atop a high mountain, it offers stunning views of the surrounding area, where the turbulent waters of the Aragvi and Kura rivers meet. The temple draws thousands of tourists due to its remarkable architecture, scenic location, and historical significance. The name of the church translates from Georgian as “the cross,” and it has a rich history that we will share with you during the visit.
  • Mtskheta - Our next stop is Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia and a museum city, which, like Jvari Monastery, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inhabited for over 2500 years, it was once the capital of the early Kingdom of Iberia. This historic town is home to numerous ancient monuments, including the Pompey Bridge, a stone bridge over the Kura River built around 65 BC during the time of Pompey the Great, a 4th-5th century church, the 1st-century Bebris Castle, and the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, one of the most sacred places in Georgia, where Christ’s robe is said to be buried.
  • Uplistsiche Cave Town - Our journey continues to Uplistsikhe, the “Fortress of God,” an ancient 3000-year-old cave city carved into the rock. This site played a crucial role in Georgia’s history. Its uniqueness lies in its structure, which has preserved architectural and religious buildings spanning several thousand years. Today, 150 caves remain, some of which we will explore during our tour. Highlights include a cave tunnel, an ancient sun temple, the royal cave of King Tamara, a winery, a 6th-century church, a library, and an ancient pharmacy.
  • Gori - Our final stop is the city of Gori, the hometown of the famous Georgian leader of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin. Here, you can visit the house where Stalin was born and see his armored train. The Stalin Museum showcases his personal items, such as his pipe, chair, and sword, as well as photos from his childhood and his first arrest by Tsarist police for revolutionary activities. The museum also features a hall of gifts received from various countries, including Germany, Poland, China, and the UK.

An excellent trip - It was a special tour through the history of Georgia, with a very competent and attentive guide. The tour was carried out with a car and among the new tourist attractions we could also see part of this wonderful country. I recommend it.

We had been using Viator... - We had been using Viator in Europe numerous times, so far so good. Our tour guide for this trip, George, was very knowledgeable, friendly and spoke good English. We booked this tour just for the Uplistsikhe Cave and it was totally worth it. Hope to enjoy your good service in near future.

Thanks Giorgi! - We did a 4 person private tour to Gori and Uplistsikhe for a good price. Each of us had already been to the sights at Mtskheta, so we wanted a longer, dedicated visit to Uplistsikhe and shorter visit to Gori (most tours package all of these together which seems rushed). Giorgi was a great driver and interesting guide who answered our many questions about Georgia's past and present. He also helped guide us through the cave town and was patient with the time we wished to spend exploring on our own.
