• Magwood Drive - Guests will pass by the residence of the first commercial shrimper on Shem Creek and view the “shrimp shacks,” where the original shrimpers resided in this historic neighborhood.
• Geechie Seafood - As part of the tour, visitors will explore this generational shrimping family’s facility and discover the economic origins of shrimping.
• Mt. Pleasant Seafood - Guests will observe a variety of locally sourced seafood at this family-run facility and discuss the decline of this vital fishery, noting how the town’s fleet reduced from nearly 100 trawlers to just 4 by 1998.
• Shem Creek Park - Tour participants will observe diverse wildlife from the public park and learn about the ecological importance of waterways like Shem Creek. This is just one of many stops on the tour, which includes visits to historic structures and culturally significant areas.

• Snacks

This walking tour, guided by Captain Bryan, is far from the typical “sit there and be quiet” tour where the guide forgets you. Instead, after a brief introduction, Captain Bryan will take participants on a historical journey exploring how Shem Creek rose to fame with its renowned shrimping fleet and much more. Unlike any other tour in the region, guests have the opportunity to witness the industry in action. The group might even meet Mr. Rector at Geechie Seafood, with his impressive shrimp boats, which are beautiful symbols of the abundant harvests conducted offshore. This is not just a tour; it is an experience that allows guests to fully immerse themselves in the Shem culture. Participants will leave with a sense of history, culture, and language, but most importantly, they will gain a deep appreciation for the local shrimpers and the rich history of these dedicated men and women.
