Government Gardens - A historic landmark and popular tourist destination in Rotorua, Government Gardens is a must-see. Originally called Paepaekumana, the local Māori iwi (tribe) generously gifted 50 acres to the Crown in the late 1800s “for the benefit of the people of the world.” The land, rich with geothermal features and therapeutic hot pools, was officially vested in the New Zealand Government in 1898 to be developed as a health spa akin to those in Europe. It is home to one of New Zealand’s most iconic and photographed buildings.

Kuirau Park - Located at the northern end of Rotorua, this vibrant public park features walking tracks leading to areas of active geothermal activity. Visitors are generally safe as long as they remain on the cool side of the safety fences. Historically, the small lake in the park was cooler and known as Taokahu. According to legend, a beautiful young woman named Kuiarau was bathing in the waters when a taniwha (mythical creature) pulled her into his lair beneath the lake. The gods, angered by this, made the lake boil to destroy the taniwha forever. Since then, the bubbling lake and steaming land have been named after the lost woman, with a slight change in spelling.
