Highlights

Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast and a briefing from your guide, leave Moshi at 9 AM, drive for 45 minutes to the Marangu Gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro, register with the national park, and begin hiking at 10:30 AM. In the rainforest, look for towering Eucalyptus trees, bird life, and Colobus monkeys. At these lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts should be sufficient, but keep your rain gear and warmer clothing handy. Stop halfway for lunch, and reach the Mandara Huts at 2 or 3 PM. Unpack, rest, and have some tea or coffee. A 15-minute side trip to Maundi Crater is a good way to see the surroundings including Northern Tanzania and Kenya. Dinner is served during the early evening at 7 PM. Bathrooms with running water are available.

Additional Information

Zara Tours assists in leading expeditions up the ‘Coca Cola’ or ‘tourist’ route, also known as the Marangu Route, the simplest and quickest path to Kilimanjaro’s peak. This is the only pathway on Kilimanjaro offering the luxury of solar-powered sleeping lodges and cozy beds at every station. The lodges are shared, each bunk equipped with a sponge mattress and cushion. Bathrooms with running water are present at the lower two stations. The final station provides rudimentary men’s and women’s restroom facilities. Climbing groups from all over the globe gather and share meals in the dining lodges, creating a cheerful, high-spirited environment. Soft drinks, bottled water, and beer might be available for purchase at the lodges. Please carry small denominations of Tanzanian currency to buy these commodities (prices rise with altitude). This route can be completed in 5 days, but a 6-day trip would allow better acclimatization. The additional day can be spent at Horombo for rest or climbing to a basecamp beneath Kibo’s subsidiary summit, Mawenzi.

Memorable Experience - My wife, three friends, and I embarked on a 7-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Machame route with Zara Tours, based in Moshi, Tanzania. Our guide, Ambrose, along with his team of porters and cooks, were incredible. Thanks to Ambrose's years of experience and the pace he set, we successfully reached the summit. Everything was perfect! The food was delicious, and we were provided with hot water for washing each morning and night, as well as our own private bathroom and dining tent. I highly recommend them to anyone.

10/10 amazing experience - We took the Lemosho route with Zara tours and it was an amazing experience. They had a fantastic crew and guides who cared for us on the hikes as well as in the camps. Our tents were always set up by the time we got to the camps, great food was prepared morning and evening, and they had the greatest energy sending us off with dance and singing every day. We were supported throughout this adventure and they were a big part of making that experience happen!
