- Mosta Rotunda - The Mosta Dome is arguably the most remarkable church in Malta, featuring a massive rotunda that ranks as the third largest in the world. Visitors can explore the dome and shelters here.
The Mosta Dome church, dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady, was constructed in 1860. During World War II, the church narrowly escaped destruction when a 200kg bomb fell through the dome during an air raid but did not explode. Remarkably, all 300 people attending morning mass were unharmed. On April 9, 1942, the bomb’s detonator was removed, and a replica is now displayed inside the church, making it a famous tourist attraction. The Mosta Dome, or Rotunda, took 27 years to build and was designed by George Grognet de Vasse, a French designer who lived in Mosta.
Mosta’s festa, celebrating St. Mary or the Assumption of Our Lady, is held annually on August 15.

Each luzzu features two “eyes” on the front, a tradition rooted in both Catholicism and superstition, believed to ward off the evil eye and protect fishermen from the dangers of the deep.
