The Marangu trail guides you calmly through woodlands, heathlands and then over The Saddle, a high-elevation wilderness dividing the principal peak, Kibo, 5895m, from rugged Mawenzi, 5149m, to Kibo Hut. From this point, an early departure is required for the climb to Uhuru Point (the summit of Kibo). The route takes a winding path up steep scree, which is easier to ascend when itâs frozen.
The vistas from the edge of the crater at Gillmanâs Point at sunrise can be breathtaking. Just above lies Uhuru Peak. This is a challenging trek but manageable for a fit individual accustomed to walking in mountainous terrains. A supplementary day for adjusting to the height is suggested at Horombo from where one can enjoy various trails.
