Moshi - Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our driver will be waiting for you in the arrival hall. You can identify him by a sign with either the lead traveler’s name or your own name if you are traveling solo. After completing all arrival formalities, you will be transported to Keys Hotel in Moshi town for an overnight stay.
Umbwe Gate - Umbwe Cave Campsite
Mount Kilimanjaro - You will be picked up from the hotel and driven to Umbwe gate. After completing the gate registration procedures, the trek begins through the rainforest to Umbwe Cave Campsite, where your tents will already be set up. You will stop here for dinner and an overnight stay. Today’s trek will take you across ridges and valleys through a dense forest.
Umbwe Cave Campsite to Barranco Hut Campsite.
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, you will trek through the remaining forest to the moorland and heath zone, enjoying stunning views of Barranco valleys and the ice cap atop the mountain. You will then arrive at Barranco Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Barranco Campsite to Karanga Campsite
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today involves a short walk. Late in the morning, you will start climbing Barranco Wall, reaching 4200m for acclimatization. You will then continue crossing ridges and valleys to Karanga Campsite for a hot lunch. After lunch, you will have a short rest and then undertake another acclimatization trek up the scree slopes towards the Southern ice field, before returning to the camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Karanga Campsite to Barafu Campsite
Mount Kilimanjaro - The trek to Barafu Ridge Campsite is challenging due to the altitude. Although the walking hours are few, the steep ascent requires a slow pace to avoid fatigue and altitude sickness. You will traverse an alpine desert with strong cold winds, as there are no trees and you get closer to the Kibo glaciers. You will have lunch and an early dinner, then rest until midnight when the summit climb begins.
Barafu Hut Campsite to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Hut Campsite
Mount Kilimanjaro - The day starts around midnight with a light breakfast, followed by final preparations for the summit ascent. The aim is to reach Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise. Departing at 12:00 am, you will switchback up steep scree or snow, reaching Stella Point on the crater rim at 5,861m between 4 and 5 am. Here, you will have views of the crater and its icecaps. After an hour of hiking along the Kibo crater rim, you will reach Kilimanjaro’s true summit, Uhuru Peak, where you can take photos. After the summit, descend back to Barafu Huts Campsite for lunch and rest, then continue down through the moorland and heath zone to Mweka Huts Campsite for dinner and an overnight stay.
Mweka Hut Campsite to Mweka Gate
Mount Kilimanjaro - On your final day on the mountain, you will descend to Mweka Park Gate through the Montane forest, a descent that takes 3-6 hours. At the gate, you will sign out and prepare to board the vehicle for the transfer back to Keys Hotel in Moshi, where you will receive your certificate and enjoy a well-deserved celebration.

Umbwe route is a less popular trail that deserves attention. In the past, it was perceived as a difficult route. However, while it is steeper in the first two days, the route is still suitable for many hikers. It begins on the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, converging with Lemosho route and Machame route on the third day before the Barranco Wall. A key characteristic of Umbwe is that during the first two days you will hardly see other trekkers
Overall, it’s a very scenic route that will allow you to see some of the best views on Kilimanjaro, traverse all of the mountain’s climatic zones, and observe its unique plants and animals.
