Arrival
Moshi - Upon reaching Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a warm welcome awaits from your dedicated Legend Expeditions guide, who will personally accompany you to a luxurious hotel. This hotel is designed for your utmost comfort, featuring cozy rooms, hot water, attentive and courteous staff, a swimming pool, and reliable Internet access. Once settled, join your fellow climbers for a team meal to build camaraderie before your adventure. In the evening, your guide will provide a comprehensive briefing to ensure you are fully prepared for the journey ahead. For those interested, there is an optional short tour into Moshi town to explore its vibrant local charm.
Big Tree Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - At 8am, you will be picked up from the hotel and transferred to the Lemosho gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side. After registration, the climb begins steadily through the forests of the Lemosho glades, leading to Big Tree camp where you will spend the night. During the short trek, keep an eye out for Blue and Colobus Monkeys.
Shira Camp 1
Kilimanjaro National Park - Today covers a lot of ground as you trek across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather scattered with volcanic rock formations. A reasonable amount of altitude is gained as you head towards Shira 1, with some parts of the route being fairly steep. The steady climb across the moorland of the Shira Plateau aids acclimatization while offering great panoramic views. As you approach camp, you will get your first close-up view of Kilimanjaro.
Shira Camp 2
Kilimanjaro National Park - Today offers a chance to view the northern ice fields from the mountain’s western side and cross the vast plateau that was once a volcano larger than Kilimanjaro. The destination is Shira 2 Camp, with a small diversion to scale Shira Cathedral for extra acclimatization and to reach another summit. Then, proceed to Shira 2 Camp for lunch and a restful night.
Barranco Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - Today’s trek heads straight uphill towards the lava ridges beneath the Western Breach glaciers. You will reach the towering pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640m), the day’s high point and a great lunch spot. In the afternoon, a steep descent leads to the camp for the night, located in the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960m), sheltered by towering cliffs but offering extensive views of the plains below. Climbing high and sleeping low helps the body acclimatize effectively.
Karanga Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - The day begins by ascending the Barranco wall, traversing along a massive rock face. This is the most technical part of the expedition, requiring the use of hands and feet to climb over the wall. The Legend team will guide you safely through. Passing beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, the route heads towards the Karanga valley. From here, a final uphill trek leads to the favorite camp with panoramic views, Karanga camp, set at 3963m.
Barafu Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - After a restful night and breakfast, the journey continues to Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb traverses desolate scree slopes with no vegetation. It’s a challenging steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. Upon arriving at camp, enjoy a meal and spend the afternoon resting in preparation for a long night and day ahead. Staying hydrated and warm is crucial. An early dinner is followed by an attempt to sleep, as the climb to the summit begins between 11pm and 12pm.
The Summit
Kilimanjaro National Park - The ascent begins around midnight, climbing steeply upwards to the summit glaciers. The climb involves 4 to 5 hours of scree, gaining incredible height over a short distance. The views are spectacular. The aim is to reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of the sun appear. Surrounded by spectacular ice cliffs within the crater, the views to the jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are breathtaking. Another hour’s walk leads to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). Congratulations! After celebrating and soaking in this epic milestone, the descent begins by returning to Stella Point, then descending on scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast. Finally, head down to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Mweka Gate
Kilimanjaro National Park - A gentle trek descends through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where park formalities are completed and a final team meal with the local team is enjoyed! Vehicles then transport you back to the hotel in Moshi, where a welcome shower (and perhaps a cold beer or two!) awaits before the big celebration.
Depart or Safari
Moshi - The day is free to relax after the trek, before the flight home. Depending on flight times, you can either unwind at the hotel or explore Moshi town.
There is also the opportunity to extend the adventure with a safari, designed and led by Legend Expeditions.
