Conquering Kilimanjaro: A Thrilling Ascent via the Lemosho Route

Drawn by the allure of Kilimanjaro’s majestic peaks and the promise of pristine wildlife, I embarked on the Lemosho Route with Altezza Travel. Join me as I recount the thrilling ascent and the unforgettable vistas that awaited.

Arrival and Preparation

As I stepped off the plane at Kilimanjaro International Airport, the excitement was palpable. The air was thick with anticipation, and the majestic silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro loomed in the distance, beckoning me to embark on this thrilling adventure. The Altezza Travel team greeted me with warm smiles and whisked me away to a cozy hotel nestled in the foothills of the mountain. The evening was spent in a detailed briefing, where our group of 13 hikers was introduced to the guides and porters who would accompany us on this epic journey.

The next morning, we set off towards the Londorossi Gate, the western entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. The drive was filled with laughter and camaraderie, as our guides shared stories of past climbs and the wonders that awaited us. Upon reaching the gate, we were met with the formalities of acquiring climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service. With everything in order, we began our ascent, the first steps of a journey that would take us through diverse climatic zones and breathtaking landscapes.

The Ascent: A Journey Through Nature’s Masterpiece

The Lemosho Route is renowned for its scenic vistas and pristine wildlife, and it did not disappoint. As we trekked through the Shira Plateau, the landscape transformed from lush forests to heathlands, each step revealing a new facet of Kilimanjaro’s beauty. The guides, with their infectious good mood, kept our spirits high, and the porters ensured our comfort, carrying our equipment and setting up camp each night.

The weather was unpredictable, with rain, hail, and snow challenging our resolve. Yet, the Altezza team was prepared for every eventuality, providing us with hot soup and tea to warm our bodies and spirits. The private toilet service was a luxury I hadn’t anticipated, but it proved invaluable, especially with the effects of Diamox. The public facilities were less than ideal, and having a clean, private space close to our campsite was a blessing.

As we climbed higher, the air grew thinner, and the terrain more rugged. The Lava Tower was a formidable sight, standing tall at 4,630 meters. We paused here for lunch, taking in the awe-inspiring views and allowing our bodies to acclimate. The descent to Barranco Camp was a welcome relief, and the sight of the Barranco Wall, though intimidating, filled us with a sense of accomplishment.

Reaching the Summit: A Triumph of Spirit

The final push to Uhuru Peak was a test of endurance and willpower. We set off from Barafu Camp under the cover of darkness, each pair of climbers accompanied by a personal guide. The ascent was grueling, the high altitude taking its toll, but the support of the team and the promise of reaching the summit kept us moving forward.

As the first light of dawn broke over the horizon, we reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The sense of achievement was overwhelming, a culmination of days of hard work and determination. We celebrated with hugs and tears of joy, taking in the breathtaking views from the roof of Africa.

The descent was swift, and we were reminded to tread carefully, as most accidents occur on the way down. The Altezza team continued to impress with their logistics, ensuring our safety and comfort every step of the way. As we reached Millennium Camp, the relief of lower altitudes was palpable, and we reveled in the satisfaction of a successful climb.

Reflecting on this incredible journey, I am filled with gratitude for the Altezza team and the unforgettable experience they provided. The Lemosho Route offered a perfect blend of challenge and beauty, and I am already dreaming of my next adventure in this magnificent land. For those seeking a thrilling and sustainable travel experience, I cannot recommend this climb enough. Kilimanjaro Adventure
