Arrival Day

Moshi Town - Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be greeted and transported by our driver to Keys Hotel in Moshi for a briefing and an overnight stay.

Londorossi Gate (2250m) – Big Tree Camp (2780m)

Mount Kilimanjaro - The adventure begins. A two and a half hour drive will take you to Londorossi Gate for registration by the national park authorities. From there, you will drive another 15 km into the dense rainforest to the starting point. A moderately steep path leads to Big Tree Camp (2780m). Keep an eye out for monkeys and interesting birds along the way. Tents will be set up, and hot tea and washing water will be ready for you.

Forest Camp to Shira One Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro - Ascend from the forested slopes of Lemosho through Podocarpus and Juniper forest, breaking out onto the heath zone and the Shira Plateau. Lunch will be taken on the trail, and you will arrive at camp by mid-afternoon. Overnight at Shira 1 Camp.

Shira One Camp to Shira Two Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro - After a long hike and significant altitude gain, today is a shorter day, and you will arrive at Shira 2 camp in time for lunch. This is a good day for acclimatization, with the option of an afternoon walk with your guides. Overnight at Shira 2 Camp.

Shira Two Camp to Lava Tower Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro - The route to Lava Tower takes you from the heath zone into the alpine desert zone, where few plants or animals can survive the extreme conditions. This half-day trek includes lunch at camp. In the afternoon, weather permitting, you have the option to scramble to the top of the nearby Lava Tower. Overnight at Lava Tower Camp.

Lava Tower Camp - Karanga Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro - After two half days, you now face a relatively long day to Karanga camp. The choice of Karanga camp is strategic for acclimatization, and you will arrive in the late afternoon. Sunsets here are particularly spectacular, with views of the southern glacial valleys and ice fields towering over 3000 feet above you. Overnight at Karanga Camp.

Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro - Today is another half day of ascending to Barafu camp. Lunch will be taken at camp, allowing plenty of time to relax before the summit attempt. The desolate alpine desert and strong winds characterize this camp, but the evening offers splendid views of Mawenzi volcano. Overnight at Barafu Camp.

Barafu Camp (4640m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka Camp (3080m)

Mount Kilimanjaro - Setting off just after midnight, you will climb the frozen volcanic dust by headlamp towards Stella Point on the crater rim, a journey of about six hours. The sun should rise as you arrive. Just an hour or two more, and you will reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point of the crater. After a short break for photos and celebrations, you will begin the steep and dusty descent. The volcanic ash will have thawed by then. You will stop for a short tea break at Barafu before continuing downhill for about three hours to Mweka camp (3080m). This is your overnight stop. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and enjoy a hearty supper.

Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate

Mount Kilimanjaro - The day begins with a traditional farewell ceremony from the porters. After about three hours of descending through the lush forest, you will reach Mweka gate, where the driver will be waiting to take you back to Keys Hotel in Moshi town. A hot shower, a cold drink, a debrief, and your certificate of achievement will be waiting for you. Congratulations!

Kilimajaro - I don't typically write reviews, but Kilimanjaro Heroes played such a pivotal role in my Tanzania experience that I felt compelled to share. For the month leading up to my arrival, they maintained daily and timely contact via WhatsApp, answering every question I had with detailed justifications and references. They took all my desires, concerns, and time constraints into account and built a seamless itinerary that included airport pickup, hotel lodging, an 8-day Kilimanjaro trek on the Lemosho route, a 4-day safari, a coffee farm tour, and transportation to Dar es Salaam (continuing on to Zanzibar). The trek was incredible. The team met us at the hotel in the morning, where Onesmo carefully checked our gear to ensure we had everything necessary for the hike. We stopped by the office to pick up a few missing items, and the Keys Hotel kindly stored the extra luggage we didn’t need on the mountain. Our two tour guides, Onesmo and Theophil, were outstanding. Their knowledge of the terrain, weather patterns, and timing was spot on, allowing them to make accurate predictions that helped us navigate the route efficiently. Onesmo frequently stopped along the way to provide insight into the unique plants, animals, and geological formations that make Kilimanjaro such a breathtaking landscape. More than anything, Onesmo and Theophil fostered an incredibly positive atmosphere, filling the trek with great conversations and continuous jokes. On the first day of our hike, it happened to be my friend’s birthday, and after dinner, the team surprised us with a cake and a small celebration. This was above and beyond our expectations and made for an unforgettable moment. The Food The chef (Shedrack Boka) was amazing! I still don’t know how he managed to prepare such high-quality meals on the mountain, but every dish exceeded my expectations. Fresh fruits, crisp vegetables, handmade bread and crepes, delicious soups, stews, and curries—it felt like restaurant-quality dining in the middle of the wilderness/mountain top. Along with The Chef, Twalibu Self doubled as both a porter and a waiter, ensuring we had everything we needed, from hot water for washing to tea, coffee, snacks, and toiletries. His attentiveness made the experience even more comfortable. The Porters Now, let’s talk about the porters (Ally Suley, Vicent Mishana, Richard Batholomeo, Thomas Lonyoki, Jonathan Hosea, and Abas Idd). Their strength and endurance were nothing short of inspiring. Yes, they carried our gear and often raced ahead to set up camp before we arrived, but they also provided unwavering encouragement throughout the trek. Their singing, cheering, and motivation made us feel like part of a true team, pushing us forward as we conquered Kilimanjaro. Final Thoughts I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The professionalism, expertise, and warmth of the entire Kilimanjaro Heroes team made this journey unforgettable. Based on my experience, I feel more than comfortable recommending them to anyone looking for a top-tier guide company to take them up the mountain.
