The Machame route, often referred to as the Whiskey route, is renowned for its challenging climb. This trek can be completed in a minimum of six days and five nights on the mountain. However, it is most commonly undertaken over seven days and six nights to allow for better altitude acclimatization. The journey begins at Machame Gate, situated at the southern base of the mountain, amidst its lush, fertile rainforest.

The path leads towards the Shira plateau before looping along the southern circuit halfway around the mountain, offering climbers spectacular views from all directions. The summit is approached from the east, and the descent follows the Mweka trail, eventually returning to Moshi.
