From the fifth to the eighth century, Mont Saint-Michel was part of Neustria and remained unconquered during the Hundred Years’ War. King Louis XI later turned it into a prison. According to legend, the archangel Michael appeared to Aubert of Avranches, the bishop of Avranches, in 708 and instructed him to build a church on the rocky island.
Saint Malo
Saint-Malo - This city was home to corsairs, French privateers, and sometimes pirates. Jacques Cartier, the Breton explorer who is credited with discovering Canada, lived here. The first colonists from Saint-Malo also established a settlement on the Falkland Islands, which were named “Îles Malouines” in French, eventually giving rise to the Spanish name “Islas Malvinas.”
Cathedrale de Saint-Malo - This church was dedicated to Saint Vincent of Saragossa. It was constructed during the episcopacy of Jean de Châtillon (1146-1163) on the site of an ancient church founded in the 7th century.
