Great Food Tour. Lots of Tasty Treats! - Absolutely loved this tour. Not only was it a food tour but an exploration also of the city sites and their background and history. I met my guide, Marwa at Fort Jesus where she covered the background and history of this very important UNESCO site. From there, we walked the streets of Old Town, stopping first at an open coffee place along the waters looking onto the Indian Ocean. Here we mingled with the locals, indulging in some African coffee infused with ginger and cinnamon, enjoying the open views and fresh breeze of the ocean. Our walk took us past the first police station, the first hotel, the old spice port, an ancient mosque dating back to the 16th century, and many other interesting sites. In a small alleyway we had our next food tasting. Bajias or falafels and deep fried potatoes with chilli sauce, cooked over an open wooden fire. This was so tasty and perhaps my favourite of the food tour. Despite knowing there would be plenty more food along the tour, I really did indulge myself in this first food tasting. A tuk tuk ride took us to the spice markets and then Makadara Rd, in Old Town. A popular street with many cafes and restaurants and street food stalls. Here I indulged myself in some wonderful sugar cane juice freshly squeezed by the vendor and laced with a touch of mint, chilli and lemon. Across the street we entered a little hut and had some chicken shawarma filled with various gorgeous sauces, and a small walk further there was some barbecued makashki waiting for us to sample, very moist and infused with a lovely smoky aroma. Makadara Rd is certainly one of the best areas to try local African cuisine. The popular Barka restaurant and Amorino Cafe and Restaurant also reside along this street. My guide, Marwa, really did make this a memorable food tour. Her knowledge of the city and it's sites, the culture and their history, and the local people whom all knew her well, made for a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Overall, a great tour and one that I can highly recommend and should be on everyone's itinerary.
