Highlights
  • Fort Jesus Museum - The day trip starts with a pick-up from your hotel or chosen location in Mombasa around 8 am. You’ll drive through the City Center towards the historic old town (Kibokoni) to visit the renowned Fort Jesus Museum. Designed by Italian Giovanni Battista and constructed between 1593 and 1596 by order of King Philip of Portugal, the fort was built to protect Mombasa’s old port.

Here, you can delve into the rich history of Mombasa and its development. Following this, a guide will lead you on a tour passing by the Mombasa Club, Africa Hotel, Mandhry Mosque, Government Square, and into the Old Port, continuing towards the Old Spice Market. As the tour progresses, you’ll walk through old colonial houses and mosques, uncovering the culture and origins of Mombasa.

Lunch will be in the old town, featuring local cuisine such as seafood, pilau, or biryani, allowing you to savor Swahili delicacies. Afterward, enjoy a scenic drive along Mama Ngina Drive, where the island meets the ocean.

Just a few meters away is the Likoni Ferry channel, connecting the North and South Coast. Finally, visit the famous Pembe za Ndovu (Elephant Tusks), a symbol of Mombasa’s historical role in the ivory trade, also depicted on the back of the 50 Ksh note. Your driver-guide will stop for a photo session, and you’ll have the opportunity to shop in the streets of Mombasa town.

  • Haller Park - In the afternoon, head to Haller Park in time to feed the giraffes.

Haller Park (formerly Bamburi Nature Trail) is situated south of the Bamburi cement plant along the Mombasa/Malindi highway. Since 1971, the company has transformed barren limestone quarries into a thriving ecosystem of forests, grasslands, and ponds. Today, Haller Park is home to a variety of wildlife, including hippos, giraffes, buffalos, and antelopes, as well as smaller mammals and birds.

The park was the first to receive the United Nations Environmental Program Global 500 Roll of Honour award for its unique and ecologically sound rehabilitation efforts. It features a Game Sanctuary, Reptile Park, small demonstration Fish Farm area, Palm Garden, Crocodile pens, and a giraffe viewing platform, offering numerous attractions to educate and entertain the over 160,000 annual visitors. The park’s diverse vegetation ranges from mangrove palms and indigenous shade trees to coastal forests, many of which are rare and endangered, making it a haven for botanists. Each plant plays a crucial role in the ecosystem’s harmony.

Haller Park also provides a habitat for various animal species, from playful Vervet monkeys to graceful giraffes, and a wide array of birds including Weaver birds, Kingfishers, Storks, Herons, Egrets, Owls, Eagles, Kites, Cranes, Ibis, and Sandpipers, making it a must-visit for bird enthusiasts.

You can choose to visit Haller Park or continue to Akamba Handicraft, a local association of artisans producing and selling wooden carvings and other souvenirs in Mombasa. Tour the workshop to see the craftsmanship in action, and shop for carvings and souvenirs, which can also be shipped abroad.

After shopping, you’ll be taken back to your hotel or drop-off point in time for dinner.

Great Day! - In the morning we had a walk through the old town. Ken told us a lot about the history of Mombasa and we visited exciting spots. He also showed us the local market where we could taste and buy several spices. Lunch was at the Copa cabban Beach Bar. The food was very tasty (both fish and chicken) and the atmosphere at the beach was just great. In the afternoon, our driver Eric brought us to the Haller Park. We could watch the feeding of the crocodiles and the hippos. Our highlight was that we could even feed the giraffes ourselves. We can absolutely recommend this tour! We had a great day with Eric! He drove us savely through the busy streets while telling us very interesting stories about Mombasa. It was fun that he was also interested in our culture, so we had a great conversation!

Really good and professional service - I really recommend this tour - We booked this tour for the 29th of December 2019. We really appreciated the tour, everything was so well organised. We had a highly knowledgeable guide who provided high details about the history of the different places we visited. The visit of the ancient town really put you back in time with its ancient buildings, some of which are listed and preserved. We were really blown-away by the Sea Food Lunch on the beach; It was way above our expectations, extremely delicious, well presented and the place really convenient. We really appreciated our driver as well, who was well mannered and allowed us ample time to take our pictures. We highly recommend this tour and that's a very honest review from our sides Helodie and friends

Unreliable! - We looked forward to make this tour with our family, but one hour before departure time we got a phone call from the operator Natives Tours, that we should have left two hours before the agreed time. It was no longer possible to make this (private!) tour. Natives Tours claimed they had sent an email, but definitely I didn't received it. Very disappointing, because we really wanted to see the highlights from Mombasa. I assume we get a refund, but Natives Tours denies responsability. To be continuted.......
