Highlights
  • Iya Kazura Bridge - In the past centuries over 13 of these bridges offered passage over the Iya River, but nowadays only 3 remain.
  • Manniquin Pis - Visitors have a stunning view over the steep surrounding mountains and the turquoise Iya river, flowing more than 200 meters below them.
  • Oboke Koboke - Oboke Gorge (大歩危, Ōboke) and neighboring Koboke Gorge (小歩危) a little ways downstream, are narrow, steep sided gorges near the entrance to the Iya Valley and popularly combined with a visit there. Cut by the swirling rapids of the Yoshino River, their names mean “big dangerous steps” and “small dangerous steps” as their jagged, rocky walls can be perilous to navigate.

The gorges are one of the leading outdoor destinations in Japan, rivaling Minakami in Gunma Prefecture, and are known for their beautiful natural scenery and for the variety of outdoor attractions, such as whitewater rafting and canyoning, that can be enjoyed on the river.

  • Nagoro Scarecrow Village - Scarecrow Village is also known as the ‘Scarecrow Village in the Sky’ because of its location at an altitude of 900 metres. The villagers can be seen living a leisurely life, with people working in the fields of the village, basking in the sun under the eaves of private houses and enjoying well-wishers’ meetings by the roadside. There are 27 villagers and 200 scarecrows!
This is truly a ‘scarecrow village’.
    Open all year round
  • Okuiya Niju Kazurabashi Bridge - *Closed during the winter season (December to March)
Last stop of the day will be the double vine bridges of Oku-Iya Kazurabashi. These two vine bridges are located very close to each other and are called husband-and-wife-bridge. These bridges are definitely more of the adventurous type and should be avoided by people with fear of heights. There is also a small cable car that is operated by hand to cross over the river.
  • Mt. Tsurugi - *Closed during the winter season (December to March)

Mount Tsurugi is a 1955 meter high mountain that lies at the eastern end of the remote Iya Valley. The second tallest mountain on Shikoku Island, Mount Tsurugi is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains and a center of Shugendo, a Japanese folk religion based on mountain worship. Mount Tsurugi is a popular hiking destination and, despite its name which translates to Sword Mountain, far from a challenging climb.

*If you want to visit Mt. Tsurugi, you have to extend the tour duration by 2 hours as it takes about one hour from Iya Valley to Mt. Tsurugi.
Please contact Japan Guide Agency at [email protected].

  • Ochiai Village - A small hamlet in the heart of Iya Valley with a collection of historical farm houses dating back to the mid-Edo era. Perched on a mountain side visitors can get an insight on the rural lifestyle and traditions that have been kept alive until the present day.

Iya Valley 6 Hour Private Taxi Tour - Our driver, Mr. Higashi, picked us up at Oboke Station, and we had a great day from there! We took a beautiful boat ride in Oboke Gorge then stopped at the Heike Yashiki Folklore Museum. Mr. Higashi was very helpful in explaining many of the exhibits they had (I especially loved the refrigerator!). The vine bridge was absolutely spectacular and so exciting to cross, and Mr. Higashi made sure we didn't miss the nearby waterfall. This experience was absolutely worth it: many of the stops on the trip are a great distance apart, and I don't think we could have visited them all in one day on our own. I'm very grateful we had this experience.

Beautiful wilderness scenery - Our English speaking taxi driver collected us from our hotel 4S Stay at Awa-Ikeda and drove us through the Iya Valley stopping at significant viewing spots. He played English narration to explain what we were looking at. The Vine bridge was spectacular and the Peeing Boy was amusing! The roads were narrow and winding, so it was always a surprise to see what was around the next corner. Interesting old museum, and a fun boat trip. I would recommend this tour to someone who has seen all the “major” sights of Japan and is looking for something a little bit different.

Very good service - If you don't have a car or can't rent one, this service is a good option. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. I gave it a 4 because the walk feels a little rushed, but it gives you time to visit the most popular spots. The driver was friendly and attentive; He gave us clear directions and asked us which points we preferred to visit.

Iya Valley, River Boat Ride, Manniquin Pee, Vine Bridge & more by Private Taxi - We stayed in AwaIkeda at 4S Stay Hotel (Ryokan),which is central, right opposite the JR Train and Bus Station. There is also an Information Office where the Staff is very helpful, especially one lady by the name of Tomako who's fluent in English. We discussed that we wished to go to the Iya Valley & surrounds the following day by English speaking Taxi, and she very kindly called the Taxi Service in Oboke & booked it for us.The ladyTaxi Driver was most curtious & knowledgable, and showed us everything we wished to see. We caught the JR Train to Oboke and back- (a 20 min ride) from AwaIkeda, which was very handy.
