It served as Egypt’s government seat and the rulers’ residence for nearly 700 years, from the 13th century until Abdeen Palace was built in the 19th century. Positioned on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near central Cairo, it offers a strategic vantage point overlooking the city and dominating its skyline. At the time of its construction, it was among the most remarkable and ambitious military fortification projects. Today, it is a preserved historic site featuring mosques and museums.
