Situated atop a hill in Naples, the Certosa di San Martino Church is the repository of one of the city’s most significant treasures. Commissioned by Duke Charles of Angiò in 1325, it served as the main church of the Order of the Certosini. The monastery’s cloister, with its individual cells, showcases the seclusion, tranquility, and meditation sought by all monks. The extensive renovation project initiated in 1590 turned the Certosa church into one of Southern Italy’s biggest artistic hubs. Craftsmen from Rome and every corner of Viceregno were tasked with the monumental church’s renewal. This transformative work, although spanning a century, offers a stunning panorama today: from the vault to the magnificent floor, every side chapel and room houses an invaluable gem. The gorgeousness is overwhelming from the interior to the exterior: the urban skyline appears sharp and glorious on clear days, and at the same time enchanting and captivating in rainfall.
