Tour to Merzouga with Yassin - We took this 2 day tour which was organized for us by Yassin. It is a beautiful tour, organized in detail. We stayed at the Luxury Camp where everything was very well looked after, clean and welcoming. We recommend these tours together with Yassin. Paola and Maria Grazia.

Beautifull sun set in sandy dunes - We took a desert tour with 4x4 organized from riad Ouzine. Mr. Mohamed took us to lake Dayet Srij, gnoua musicians, nomad familly living in berber tent and than at Kasba Caravan we took two camels. Our two guides were excellent, one of them took photos of us and video. This was a pleasant ride, special feeling, beautiful sun set, really great.

Something you will never forget. - I've just left it and, for sure, I'll never forget it. You'll never find a closer experience to the desert and berber culture than this. The sunset riding the camels, the awesome tribal music till late, the tasty dinner (even a vegan option), the unspeakable sunrise that brings tears to eyes were great, sure, but the words with Hassan, the camel man, the experiences with the musicians and how great their people are, this is what will bring back with me forever. Erg Chebbi - they gate way to the Sahara Desert - We did a private tour and Erg Chebbi dunes were amazing on the edge of Sahara Desert. Our guide was able to find us a luxury camp with aircon otherwise in the heat of July it would have been unbearable at night. There were about 4 luxury tents set apart from each other as well as the other more affordable tents and they were very private. My daughter refused to do the camels rides, so we settled for quad biking on the dunes for a good one hour and stopped to see the sun-set. It was particularly windy during our trip and overcast so we did not see many stars or milky ways but the Gnawa musicians made up for this!! Supper was basic with a salad starter, grilled chicken breast and fruit and for breakfast continental style with a good selection of cakes, bread, jam, omelette etc. In the morning we visited Erfoud also known by the name of ‘Gate of Sahara Desert’ and had a chance to search for fossils in the nearby hills where we met children from a nearby Berber Nomad settlement. We shared sweets and stickers with the children who loved it. We also visited the fossil museum and shop an isolated building and very deserted. We also stopped at Rissani a small oasis town. Here we stopped at ‘Ksar El Fida’ at the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherfi founder of the Alaouite dynasty that still governs Morocco today. Rissani is quite historic as it situated on the old gold trade route of Sijilmassa a medieval city now in ruins along the River Ziz and Rissani. This western Trans-Saharan caravan trade route, which extended from the Niger River in Sudan to Tangier in northern Morocco and also connected the salt trade route to Mali and Timbuktu. If you are coming all the way out to Erg Chebbi which is interesting in itself don’t miss out on Erfoud and Rissani.

One of the greatest experiences of my life, - Oh, tremendous enjoyment and delight! Fun and pleasure. Camel trekking to see the sunset. Dances and music of colorful desert people . Large seas of dunes to the horizon. We did walking, 4x4 driving on dunes and camel trekking. Even wearing dessert garb is an exotic experience. Unforgettable!

Absolutely loved our Sahara trip - We did a four day trip starting in Fes and ending in Marrakech using Bouaouina Tours (meh wouldn't necessarily recommend that tour agency but have reviewed them separately). We spent one day in Merzouga and one night in the Sahara. I absolutely loved the dunes. Once you got away from the town they were so serene and peaceful. The sound of nothingness was beautiful as was the blue sky and orange dunes. I found the camel ride to be fine and not uncomfortable. I'm not sure what the name of our camp was, but it was surrounded by a few other camps so don't go expecting an isolated Sahara experience! Our camp gave us boards to sandboard with and blankets to watch the stars on. There was a bathroom with proper toilets - though they didn't flush. Food was good - standard tagine and tea, which was followed by the guides/chefs singing Berber music for us. Beds were comfortable and warm, just bring a hoodie or jacket to wear when outside once the sun has gone down as it can be chilly. I was expecting our guide to wake us for sunrise in the morning but he didn't so definitely set an alarm if you want to see it! Given that we paid almost £300 pp for this 4 day private tour (we couldn't find shared tour that worked for us), I would definitely advise doing it yourselves if you have the time during your trip and would be comfortable arranging the transportation. It would work out a lot cheaper! Equally if you can find a (small) shared tour I would recommend this also if you want to cut prices - just be sure to check that the company will limit the group to 6-8 people. We had trouble finding shared tours from Fes, they seemed to all be from Marrakech. On our 'private' tour we shared our desert camp with 6 other people anyway so a shared tour wouldn't be much different experience wise, but much cheaper.

Great base for camel tour into the Sahara! - This was our base for our amazing camel tour into the desert for an overnight stay. The camel tour was the highlight of Morocco! On our return we has a delicious breakfast here- best cooked eggs in Morocco (not overcooked!!!), flatbread, orange juice, tea, cheese, fruit. Clean bathroom, and it was lovely to sit and eat outside!

Mesmerized sand dunes of the Sahara Desert - Get immersed with the secrets of the Sahara Desert. First time camel ride...fun and exciting. Watch the sunset as we ride into the desert. The shadows of camels in a line is fantastic! Remember to bring along your GoPro!

WORTH THE TRIP, BUT IT IS A TRIP - Fes and Marrakech are two must see cities, and I suspect that many visitors to the Sahara go from Fes to the desert and then on to Marrakech. It is an 8 hr drive between the two cities, an 8hr drive from Fes to the desert and then a two day drive to Marrakech. So the question to ask is whether the Sahara is worth the trip and the time. For me the answer is YES for two reasons: the Sahara is unique and one of the great wonders of the world, and the drive if properly planned takes you through some amazing country--though different, think American South West--and provides insight into rural Moroccan/small town life. The luxury tents are fine. Take the camel. Don't view it as a camel ride. Think of it as the best way to get a very small taste of traveling through the desert.
