• Melidoni Cave - The Cave of Melidoni, also known as Gerontospilios, is situated about 1,800 meters northwest of the village of Mylopotamos, at an altitude of 220 meters on the southern side of Kouloukonas Mountain. This cave is significant not only for its archaeological discoveries, some of which are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon, but also for its historical importance. In October 1823, 340 women and children and 30 men from Melidoni village sought refuge in the cave to escape the Turkish army. When Hussein Beis found their hiding place, he surrounded the cave and demanded their surrender. Upon their refusal, he blocked the entrance with branches and other flammable materials and set it on fire, leading to their tragic deaths from smoke inhalation.
