Highlights

Originally based on the series of books written by Jennifer Worth, the award-winning TV adaptation of ‘Call the Midwife’ has captivated audiences worldwide since its debut in 2012. While the interiors of Nonnatus House are filmed on a closed studio set in Surrey, many exterior scenes and other locations are shot at Chatham Dockyard in Kent.

With over 10 million viewers and now in its fifth series, the Historic Dockyard Chatham in Kent has been used to depict the impoverished areas of East End London during the 1950s and 1960s.

As you stroll around the dockyard, you’ll recognize the streets and buildings that represent the area around Poplar Dock, where many memorable scenes featuring the show’s stars have been filmed.

This leisurely walking tour is led by your very own ‘midwife’ and guide. Your ‘midwife’ will share intriguing anecdotes about the show’s filming, behind-the-scenes facts, and provide background information on Chatham Dockyard itself. The tour also includes an exhibition of costumes and props used in the show, including a recreation of the Nonnatus House dining table.

Various other locations around The Dockyard have also been featured in the BBC One production, as well as in numerous other movies and TV shows.

Purchasing a ticket for the Call the Midwife Locations Tour also grants you full access to explore Chatham Dockyard.

Lovely day - Arrived by train into Chatham, very hard to find, no signs at all. Arrived at Historical docks, still no signs, had to ask the security man. Once found had a great day.

Call The Midwife Chatham Tour - Excellent tour - brilliant value for money with being able to visit other parts of dockyard with same price - lifeboats, submarine & ship that were used in the past. Also rope making exhibition. Very informative guide with pictures from all past series of C the M. Excellent exhibition of C of M no longer used props at the end.

Elaine - The best part was the filming going on in the background. We did find it difficult to find as the signage wasn't at the entrance. Worth doing.

Read the reviews before you go - Call The Midwife Tour We went as part of a coach party to Chatham Docks and the Midwife tour was included in our ticket. Our guide, Claire, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable, showing photos from the show as we reached different locations. However this is not a film set it is a location that is dressed for the programme as and when necessary. That meant what you will see is brick buildings that will, when filming, have hay bales and polystyrene blocks piled up to disguise features and where green screens will be used to give an illusion of place. Most of the iconic places like Nonatis House have been built elsewhere and but on this tour we were shown a photo, a snapshot of a moment and then had to use our imagination to visualize the event At the end of the hour long tour we went inside to a room displaying costumes, areas set up to show the corner shop and the surgery and other artifacts were on display. We were encouraged to have our photo taken, a free photo we were told, given a reference card and directed to the shop. Others have written about this so beware the sales staff in the shop, but there was no free photo just a QR code directing us to a page where we could buy a selection of you superimposed onto an iconic Midwife scene or a free download of a basic generic scene. If you look at the photos of this tour posted on TripAdvisor you will get a good feel of what you will see.

Lovely tour but mind the photos! - Had an enjoyable tour of some of the locations where CTM is filmed within the Dockyard. Irene our ‘midwife’ was very knowledgable and clearly enjoys her job and the program which came through in her talk. Loved seeing the props, costumes and sets which is only available to those on the tour. Took loads of pics to show our mum who will remember so many of the products in their original packaging! Only thing I would say is they are very keen to sell you the imposed photos, taken of you within the props warehouse, in the shop outside. One image is free as a download, then they use the same image imposed onto different images such as the shops or the docks etc. One print is £7 or 2 for £10, however I asked if all images were available for download and told no, so we left without buying any. But when I sat outside to download the free image, I found all 8 were available to download for £11!! Bit disingenuous of the staff to not inform you of this. In fact as we left one staff member said to the other ‘almost had them then!’ Just be aware 😊
