Guatape, a vibrant municipality nestled in eastern Antioquia, is just a 90-minute journey from Medellin and captivates visitors with its colorful streets, which are lined with decorative skirting boards that narrate the locale’s history and its inhabitants. Dubbed the ‘interior sea of Antioquia,’ ‘Acapulco of Colombia,’ ‘the inland Cartagena,’ ‘Paraíso Paisa,’ ‘Remanso de Paz,’ and the ‘heart of Antioquia’s East,’ this area celebrates the legacy of the tribal leader Cacique Guatapé from the pre-colonial era. It has also been known as ‘Ceja de Guatapé.’ The region is home to the iconic Guatapé Rock or Piedra del Peñol, an imposing 220-meter-high monolith in Guatapé, Antioquia. This geological formation, comprised of quartz, feldspar, and mica, had its first ascent by local Luis Eduardo Villegas López, Ramon Diaz, and Pedro Nel Ramírez on July 16, 1954. The Villegas family continues to have ownership over the rock. Today, visitors can reach its peak by ascending the 740 steps carved into the rockface.
