- Mdina - Begin your journey by exploring the ancient Medieval city of Mdina, celebrated for its luxurious palaces and fortifications, medieval and baroque architecture, and rich heritage. This magnificent city, also known as Città Vecchia (The Old City) or Città Notabile (The Noble City), is undoubtedly one of the island’s most captivating destinations.
Once the island’s capital from ancient times through the medieval era, Mdina is a truly enchanting city! A walk through its narrow streets, largely unchanged over the past 1000 years, is essential for anyone visiting the Maltese islands. It stands as one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled or fortified city. Explore this historic city with a knowledgeable local guide and immerse yourself in the city’s rich history as you wander its medieval streets. Travel back in time while admiring the magnificent palazzos and churches in the city’s unique blend of medieval and baroque styles, as well as the stunning views from the high bastion walls.
- Rabat - Exiting Mdina through the ‘Greeks Gate,’ continue on foot to the neighboring town of Rabat. Here, enjoy a stroll through the old quarter and appreciate the Maltese vernacular architecture.
- St. Cataldus Catacombs - In Rabat, visit the Catacombs dedicated to St. Cataldus, located on the outskirts of Mdina. These catacombs feature one of the best examples of an agape table, a circular platform carved from rock used for early Christian funerary rituals. Dating from the late 2nd to the 3rd centuries, these small catacombs were originally a Punic burial shaft. The graves in the catacombs are exquisite examples of canopied tombs, with many other graves carved into the rocks. This site provides some of the earliest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta.
- Dingli Cliffs - Next, proceed to Dingli Cliffs, situated off the village of Dingli on Malta’s western coast. At approximately 253 meters above sea level, these cliffs represent the highest point of the Maltese islands. The cliffs offer a majestic view; the vistas overlooking the terraced fields below and the panorama of the vast open seas with the uninhabited small island of Filfla in the background are truly breathtaking! Due to their impressive height, the cliffs can be considered natural forts, as no attacker can approach the island from the west. Perched on the edge, marking the highest point on the Maltese islands, is a charming tiny chapel built in 1646, dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene.
- San Anton Gardens - The next stop is the San Anton Botanical Gardens, located in the village of Attard. These beautiful gardens were established in the early 17th century by Grand Master Antoine de Paule to complement his summer residence, San Anton Palace, which is situated at the perimeter of the gardens and now serves as the residence of the Maltese President.
Open to the public since 1882, the gardens feature several pathways surrounded by fountains and ponds inhabited by families of ducks, swans, peacocks, peahens, and turtles. They encompass a wide variety of trees and flowers from around the world, including various palm trees, cypress, jacarandas, araucarias, and other exotic plants, some over three centuries old.
- Ta’ Qali Crafts Village - The next destination is the town of Ta’ Qali, where you will visit the Ta’ Qali Artisan Village. Located in a former British Royal Air Force wartime airfield and restored as a local artisan hub, here you can admire local craftsmen creating intricate glass art pieces using the ancient glassblowing technique, and skillfully assembling original silver and filigree jewelry, among other crafts. With a vast selection of authentic goods made by local artisans and craftsmen, such as paintings, traditional Maltese lace, gold, silver and filigree jewelry, leather goods, furniture, ceramics, and ornamental glass, this is the perfect place to pick up some truly genuine locally made souvenirs that will remind you of your visit to Malta (no obligation to buy).
- Mosta Rotunda - Conclude your tour with a visit to the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, commonly known as the Rotunda of Mosta or the Mosta Dome, a Roman Catholic parish church and Minor Basilica located in the city of Mosta. Constructed between 1833 and the 1860s to neoclassical designs, the current church’s design is based on the Pantheon in Rome. The church is renowned for having the third-largest unsupported dome in the world and is also Malta’s largest church.
The church narrowly escaped destruction during World War II when, on April 9, 1942, the German Luftwaffe dropped a bomb on the church. The bomb pierced the dome and entered the church but failed to explode, sparing the lives of more than 300 people attending the early evening mass. This event was seen by the locals as a miracle.
