- Grand Bassin - Also known as Ganga Talao
Grand Bassin is a beloved tourist destination, exuding a profound sense of spirituality. Surrounded by lush forests, it offers a serene and fulfilling atmosphere. Situated approximately 1,800 feet above sea level, it is regarded as one of the most sacred and spiritual sites for Hindus in Mauritius. The main deity worshipped here is Shiva, and at the entrance stands Mangal Mahadev, a 33-foot tall statue of Shiva with his trident, mirroring the one at Sursagar Lake in Vadodara, Gujarat, India.
During the holy month of Maha Shivratree, pilgrims from across the island journey on foot to the lake, carrying “kanwars”—vibrant and often intricately designed structures resembling temples—to collect sacred water from the lake.
- Black River Gorges National Park - Spanning 67.54 km², Black River Gorges National Park is located in the southwestern region of Mauritius. Declared a National Park on June 15, 1994, it is overseen by the National Parks and Conservation Service.
This park is rich in endemic flora and fauna, many of which are considered endangered and are actively protected as part of a national conservation initiative by the NPC (National Park and Conservation Service) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Notable species include the Mauritius Kestrel, Mauritius Parakeet, Pink Pigeon, and Mauritius Bulbul.
Approximately 300 of the 700 plant species found in Mauritius thrive in the park’s fertile grounds, including the beautiful Trochetia, Ox Tongue, Chinese Guava, and stunning Orchids and Anthuria.
As part of conservation efforts, species such as Macaques, Tenreks, Red Deer, Roe Deer, Wild Boar, various butterflies, and flying foxes have been introduced to the park.
Visitor amenities include two information centers, picnic areas, and 60 kilometers of trails for adventure enthusiasts to explore the tranquil environment.
The park also features four field stations dedicated to research.
- Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth Geopark - The Seven Coloured Earth (Terres des Sept Couleurs in French) captivates many visitors. Situated in the Chamarel plain of Black River District in southern Mauritius, this small area of sand dunes draws and fascinates everyone. The natural phenomenon of chemical reactions in the soil, shaped by rain over time, creates an incredible spectrum of colored sand dunes.
Today, the dunes are safeguarded by a wooden fence, and visitors are not permitted to walk on them. However, observation posts provide clear views of the enchanting dunes, perfect for capturing a memorable selfie with the vibrant, natural backdrop.
Children can enjoy the playground while being watched over by Giant Tortoises.
- Rhumerie de Chamarel - Le Rhumerie de Chamarel offers more than just a distillery experience. It is a thoughtfully designed venue that combines discovery, tasting, shopping, and culinary delights. Located 300 meters above the southwest coast of Mauritius, the structure is crafted to seamlessly integrate with its stunning surroundings.
The Rhumerie de Chamarel, situated on fertile land, is one of the few active distilleries that cultivates its own sugar cane, carefully selected for rum production.
The Rhumerie also features a restaurant and shop.
