Sasso Barisano - Matera, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993 and the European Capital of Culture in 2019, is sure to leave you in awe. The two Sassi districts, Caveoso and Barisano, carved into the limestone, are remarkable from an urban planning perspective due to their extraordinary history. They showcase unique human achievements, where the blend of the Sassi and the Natural and Archaeological Park of the Rock Churches creates a perfect harmony between the cultural and natural features of the area. Its outstanding universal value stems from this integration of natural and cultural elements: ‘Rioni Sassi’ are a breathtaking sight, unparalleled worldwide.

Chiese rupestri Madonna delle Virtù e San Nicola dei Greci - According to some sources, the Church of the Madonna delle Virtù was carved out in the 12th century. Like all other rock churches in the Matera area, the church is noted for its “negative architecture,” making it unique. The distinctiveness of this rock church is evident not only in its well-structured architecture but also in the later frescoes of the church. San Nicola dei Greci is a crypt particularly significant due to the preservation of some important frescoes. The Byzantine nature of the crypt is confirmed by the 11th – 12th century frescoes on the church’s walls, which are linked to the Byzantine tradition. Among the most important and best-preserved are the “triptych” frescoes of St. Nicholas, St. Barbara, and St. Pantaleone in the left apse, dating back to the 13th century, and the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist, from the 14th century.

Sassi di Matera - Just a short walk from the Cathedral in the upper part of Sasso Caveoso, visitors will find Casa Noha. From here, they can proceed to Piazza di San Pietro Caveoso to visit the rock church and enjoy a stunning panoramic view! Next, they can explore the two significant churches of Madonna dell’Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone, both carved into a mass of calcareous rock (tufo). Nearby, visitors should also explore the Casa-grotta (cave house), which was inhabited until 1957 and has now been transformed into a museum, offering a genuine glimpse of past life here. The Cathedral, Santa Maria della Bruna, dates back to 1268. Considered Apulian-Romanesque, it is situated at the highest point of the city, providing a spectacular view of the Sasso Barisano.
