Ouarzazate serves as an efficient starting point for visiting the Ait Benhaddou ksour and Kasbahs. Yet, the town itself has limited attractions. The Moroccan administration harbored grand visions for this place back in the 80s, envisioning it as the inaugural hub on the ‘Saharan Adventure’, fully equipped with an airport. It earned its nickname, ‘Morocco’s Hollywood’, due to its use as a filming location for various ‘exotic’ movies such as David Lean’s ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, Bernardo Bertolucci’s ‘Sheltering Sky’, and ‘Jesus of Nazareth’.
The Glaoui Kasbah Taorirt and the local artenasal centre (situated opposite the Kasbah) are worth exploring. Ait Benhaddou, among the most magnificent visuals of the Atlas, is acclaimed for its finely embellished and excellently conserved kasbahs (credit to UNESCO). These structures have been fashioned and refashioned as sets for numerous films including Jesus of Nazareth, Lawrence, and Orson Welles’ Sodom and Gomorrah.
