Embark on a day journey to Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, strategically constructed on a stony promontory, with its fortified walls overlooking the sea, its charming medina painted in blue and white hues, its bustling harbor and expansive sandy beaches.
Essaouira’s history can be traced back to the 8th century BC when the Phoenicians made a stopover here on their way to the equator. The true architect of the city was the Alaouite sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah, who delegated the building task to Theodore Cornut, an architect and student of Vauban. Today, Essaouira functions as an amiable small fishing port bustling with activity when the boats arrive, selling sardines and shellfish at the auction. One can see the fishermen mending their red nets by the dockside.
Savor the open-air grilled sardines at the tiny eateries in the harbor, then explore the Sqala du Port, a fortified bastion erected to shield the port and the city. It features two mighty wings located behind the Navy gate. Upon exiting the port Sqala, head towards the Moulay Hassan square.
