- Chateau De Labourdonnais - Begin your tour with a visit to the captivating Chateau De Labourdonnais, located in the northern part of the island. This meticulously maintained residence, built in 1856, was home to over three generations until 2006, when the Domaine de Labourdonnais agricultural company restored it, transforming it into an official estate and attraction.
The property serves as a unique memento of the island, offering an immersive experience into the 19th-century Mauritian lifestyle. As you enter the majestic Intendance tree-lined (Ficus Retusa) avenue leading to the château, you’ll discover a magical place that highlights Mauritian history, nature, cuisine, and craftsmanship. Exploring the mansion’s interior is a delight, with its collection of antiques and furniture dating back to the 18th century.
- SSR Botanic Garden - If you love nature, the Mauritius National Botanical Gardens are a must-visit and a delightful experience. As the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, the garden boasts over 650 plant varieties and 85 different palm trees from around the globe, some planted by royalty and renowned world leaders. The garden also features a spice garden and giant water lilies.
Previously named after former Prime Minister Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam and affectionately known as Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens by locals, it was initially a private garden for the French governor nearly 300 years ago. Encounter giant tortoises and other animals while enjoying the tranquility of nature.
- L’Aventure Du Sucre - A short drive from the gardens leads to one of the island’s remaining sugar factories: L’Aventure du Sucre. Although the factory officially closed in 1999, much of the machinery remains untouched, making it a must-see.
The approach is impressive, with an avenue of bougainvillea and coconut palms, a lake surrounded by lush greenery, leading to the charming sugar factory. A sugarcane hedge lines the final path to the restored and converted factory. Dive into the beautiful factory interior and marvel at its old machines adorned with a thousand lights, giant screens, over 35 films, a floating barge, and the sudden whistle of a railway engine. Their engaging and interactive tour provides visitors with a deeper understanding of the island’s rich history and culture.
You’ll also have the opportunity to sample unrefined sugars and treat yourself to some pure cane rum!
-
Le Fangourin - It’s time to enjoy some delicious food! Situated at L’Aventure Du Sucre, Le Fangourin Restaurant is an excellent lunch stop, offering light snacks to mouth-watering cuisine, accompanied by magnificent views from its veranda across lush, tropical countryside leading to Pieter Both Mountain in the distance.
-
Maheshwarnath Temple - Further north, visit one of the island’s oldest places of prayer and worship—a definite must-see. The Maheswarnath Mandir was built over 120 years ago on the site of a failed and demolished sugar-processing factory.
Legend has it that during its construction, a large pot of gold and silver was discovered, believed to be hidden treasure plundered by Indian Ocean pirates who attacked East Indian trading company ships for their gold and other precious cargo. This treasure helped fund the construction, and today, the temple stands in its original Ratna architectural style from West Bengal. The island’s famous annual pilgrimage to Grand Basin in celebration of Lord Shiva originated from this temple. If you wish to learn more, your guide will gladly share the significance of all the Hindu deities.
-
Mont Choisy Beach - We’ll make a brief stop at Mont Choisy Beach.
-
Grand Baie - Afterwards, enjoy a leisurely stroll through the vibrant town of Grand Bay and indulge in some shopping. You’ll find an array of small arcades and malls offering a variety of items, from cashmere garments and branded clothing to jewelry and souvenirs.
Most shops offer duty-free shopping, so remember to bring your passport.
- Notre Dame Auxiliatrice - The views from Notre Dame Auxiliatrice, also known as ‘Cap Malheureux Red Church,’ are stunning. The red-roofed church sits on the beach of Cap Malheureux and is attributed to various sources. Some say it was named after the sinking of the vessel Saint Geran on August 18, 1744, which inspired Bernardin de St Pierre to write his famous novel Paul & Virginie. Others believe it owes its name to the numerous shipwrecks that occurred in this area at the beginning of the island’s colonization.
Witness the breathtaking surroundings where local fishermen can be seen catching fresh meals.
