- Wat Ban Den - The journey begins at Wat Den Sali Si Mueang Kaen, more widely known as Wat Ban Den. This temple complex is one of the most stunning in Northern Thailand, nestled in the lush green hills of Mae Taeng District, approximately an hour’s drive north of Chiang Mai.
The temple, while traditional in design, is relatively new. Much of the current structure was developed under the leadership of a respected local abbot, Kruba Tua, who envisioned Wat Ban Den as both a sacred place of worship and a cultural icon for the community. The temple’s grandeur and artistic intricacy are truly exceptional. Visitors can explore a vast array of ornate viharns (assembly halls), gilded pagodas, and intricately crafted naga figures (mythical serpents believed to protect sacred spaces). Each structure features a distinct design and vibrant colors, merging classical Lanna architecture with elaborate modern craftsmanship.
- Chiang Dao Cave - The next stop is the renowned Chiang Dao Cave complex, extending over 12 kilometers beneath the Chiang Dao mountain. Although only a small portion is accessible to the public, it has long been a significant religious site. Inside, there is an impressive marble Burmese Buddha image along with numerous other sacred shrines.
Guided by a local expert, visitors can explore part of this enigmatic underground realm, where the cool air, profound silence, and mystical ambiance create an unforgettable experience. The tour includes passing through two narrow passages, which may be challenging for those with claustrophobia.
According to Thai legend, a hermit resided here a thousand years ago and is believed to be buried in the cave’s deepest chamber. Local lore warns that anyone who removes even the smallest rock from the cave is destined to wander its labyrinthine passages forever.
- Bua Thong Waterfalls (Nam Phu Chet Si) - After lunch, the adventure continues at the renowned Bua Thong Waterfall, also known as the Sticky Falls. This is no ordinary waterfall. The limestone rocks create a natural anti-slip surface, as the mineral deposits prevent algae growth. Consequently, the stones are surprisingly grippy rather than slippery, allowing visitors to climb both up and down the cascading water with ease. It is a playful and truly unique experience, as few waterfalls worldwide offer the chance to walk against the water’s flow without slipping.
Encircled by lush forest, the Sticky Falls are also a fantastic spot to relax and enjoy the fresh air. Visitors can challenge themselves by climbing the waterfall’s tiers or simply sit back and appreciate the refreshing scenery. Remember to bring swimwear if you’d like to cool off in the clear, cool streams at the falls’ base; it’s the perfect way to conclude the day immersed in nature.

Chedi Mae Krua Market - On the return journey to Chiang Mai, there is a brief stop at the Chedi Mae Krua Market, a vibrant local market where visitors can experience everyday Thai life up close.
Wandering through the colorful stalls, you’ll find fresh fruit and typical Thai snacks, offering a perfect opportunity to browse, soak up the atmosphere, and perhaps sample a few treats.
This visit provides the perfect chance to absorb the bustling atmosphere, interact with local vendors, and maybe taste a delicious treat or two. Whether tempted by exotic fruits never seen before or intrigued by sizzling street food, this visit offers a delightful insight into the authentic flavors and rhythms of daily life in Northern Thailand.
