- Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple - The visit to the Madurai Meenakshi Temple, one of the world’s largest temples and an architectural wonder, is truly remarkable. For over 2500 years, this temple has been the heart of Madurai City, significantly contributing to the promotion of Tamil art, music, dance, and culture. It is believed to have hosted the third assembly of the Tamil Sangam, an ancient literary gathering. The temple houses approximately 30,000 sculptures. Please note that certain items are prohibited inside the temple, such as mobiles, sharp metallic objects, perfumes/sprays, and lipsticks. These can be left at the hotel or in the car.
- Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal - The visit to the splendid Thirumalai Nayakar Palace, built by the Nayak Kings in 1636, is a highlight. The current structure was the main palace where the king resided. Originally, the palace complex was four times larger, featuring a royal residence, theatre, shrine, apartments, armory, palanquin place, royal bandstand, quarters, ponds, and gardens. Its architecture inspired the Indo-Saracenic style of buildings during British India.
- Gandhi Memorial Museum - The Gandhi Museum, located in the old palace of Rani Mangammal, vividly portrays the freedom struggle. The Gandhian movement is beautifully depicted through a picture gallery. Madurai was chosen for this museum because Gandhiji made significant decisions during his visits here. In 1921, he decided to adopt a simpler dress code while visiting Madurai. The Meenakshi Amman Temple opened its doors to Harijans in Madurai, marking a victory in the fight against untouchability. Gandhiji visited the temple in 1946 with the Harijans, a pivotal moment in this struggle.
- Vilacheri - Vilacheri, a potters’ village near Madurai, is home to over 200 families, most of whom are involved in pottery. They create dolls for numerous festivals throughout the year. The paper mache dolls crafted here decorate South Indian homes during the nine-day Navratri festival.
- Banana market - The Madurai tour concludes with a walk through the bustling banana market. Madurai is renowned for its wholesale banana market, offering a variety of bananas. The tour ends with a refreshing sip of Jigarthanda, Madurai’s most famous local cold beverage!
