“Plaza del Arrabal” was the original name of the present day “Plaza Mayor”. The “Plaza del Arrabal” was once the site of the most popular marketplace until the end of 15th century. Following the Constitution of 1812, all major plazas in Spain were renamed “Plaza de la Constitución”. It also held this name 1820 to 1823, 1833 to 1835, 1840 to 1843, and 1876 to 1922. When the Borbón king was restored in 1814, it became known as the “Plaza Real”. In 1873, the name changed to “Plaza de la República”. At the end of the Spanish Civil War the plaza received its present name of “Plaza Mayor”.

Great tour and engaging guide - We went on this tour with Jesús earlier this week, and after doing a few other similar tours in other cities in Spain, we agreed that Jesús was the most engaging tour guide we had. He talked about the history of Madrid and Spain in a way that felt more interactive and less like a lecture. The tour of the old city would have been less interesting if he didn’t keep us engaged, but he made it great. The Palace is incredible and definitely a must see in Madrid. You get to skip the whole line of people waiting outside the palace. Would definitely recommend this tour.

Pretty palace - Rodrigo was great! Fun tour and informative. We started doing an old town history walking tour and learned about the liberation of Spain from the Muslims and the differen royal families and ended with a fast past lane tour of the beautiful palace.

Excellent Tour with an Excellent Guide - We have been on several tours recently and have been very pleased with all of the guides, but Beatriz, our guide for the Royal
Palace tour was exceptional. She was so personable and had excellent knowledge about the history of Spain and its monarchs. Her descriptions of the places we were seeing really brought history to life. I feel motivated at read up more on the history of the Spanish Royals.
After the tour we were chatting with Beatriz and I mentioned there was a show I would like to see. She showed me how to obtain tickets and my husband and I had a great night at the theater.
I would definitely recommend this tour of the magnificent Royal Palace and very definitely recommend our fantastic guide, Beatriz.

Great tour of the Royal Palace - We had a group of 4 adults from the US, on a trip to Spain. Jesus did a great job telling stories, keeping us engaged, and making us laugh! It was a great time!

Nice tour - Nice tour of the Palace. Guide was informative and provided nice insight into the significance of many details around the various rooms. Tour includes a brief walk through one of the gardens and all 25 rooms open to the public inside. Audio system cut out for a few seconds occasionally but otherwise worked well. Tour company messaged us the day prior, asking us to change scheduled time from 1pm to 10am, likely to consolidate people - not an issue but be aware it could happen.

Beautiful palace, too much info - The tour starts at a travel company's office about 15 min from the palace. We were late starting and it ran closer to 2.5 hours (we'd made a lunch reservation and even though we'd given ourselves an hour grace period we barely made it on time). That said, the tour was great. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. I might argue that he provided too much information and that's why we ran so late but some people may be looking for that level of detail. The palace itself is lovely and has a lot of history. I would absolutely recommend this tour and the attraction to others; just make sure you don't have anything planned for at least an hour after it's scheduled to be over.

Buyer beware - NOT affiliated with the Royal Palace and late arrival will forfeit your purchase - We were super excited to take our son on a tour of the Royal Palace, but we kept running into difficulties purchasing our entrance tickets. The official website for the Royal Palace of Madrid was giving us difficulties in finalizing our purchase so we opted to purchase a tour through Trip Advisor. We ended up spending a lot more (172 euros for 3 people - as opposed to 60 euros), but we didn't have a lot of time or flexibility. Traffic was challenging, and we arrived a few minutes late to the Palace. We got in line for the group tours and waited only to discover that the "tickets" that we purchased had NO VALUE at the Royal Palace. The people operating the entrance to the Palace reviewed our "tickets" only to tell us that there were a lot of "estafas" (scams) regarding entrance tickets, and that they could not assist us. When we reached out to the contact number on the tickets, we discovered that we were supposed to meet at another location, and since the time had passed, we were out of luck. The receptionist had no patience or understanding, and literally laughed at our misfortune. We requested a refund that was denied. We requested to change the date/time of our tickets which was also denied. We formally requested a refund from Trip Advisor, and we never received a response. I don't think that I will be relying on Trip Advisor outside of the United States going forward. Next time that I am in Spain, I will make sure to use the actual website for the Royal Palace and not waste my time or money to these clowns. I hope this review helps someone avoid our misfortune.
