It was officially recognized as a national park in 1968, covering 105 km2. Its extension area, which includes the forest sections of Umaria and Katni, amounts to 820 km2. The park’s name, Bandhavgarh (meaning ‘Brother’s Fort’ in Sanskrit), originates from a conspicuous hillock in the region, rumored to have been granted by Lord Rama from the Hindu mythology to his sibling Lakshmana to monitor Lanka (current Sri Lanka).
