Mount Kilimanjaro - The drive from Moshi to Machame Gate takes approximately 45 minutes, passing through the village of Machame on the mountain’s lower slopes.
We start our trek from the park gate, walking through the rainforest on a winding trail up a ridge. The trail can be muddy and slippery at lower elevations, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. We continue for a short distance until we reach Machame Camp.

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - From the Shira Plateau, we head east up a ridge, passing the junction towards Kibo peak. Our direction then changes to the southeast towards the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth” (elev 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower, we reach the second junction leading to the Arrow Glacier. We then descend to Barranco Camp. Although we end the day at nearly the same elevation as we started, this day is crucial for acclimatization and will help prepare your body for summit day.

Distance: 10km/6mi
Walking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert

Elevation: 4050m/13,250ft to 4700m/15,350ft
Distance: 4km/2mi
Climbing Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), we head towards the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. We ascend northwest through heavy scree to Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At Stella Point, we take a short rest and enjoy a magnificent sunrise. Faster hikers may see the sunrise from the summit.
From Stella Point, you may encounter snow on the 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you reach the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!
We then begin our descent straight down to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. Gaiters and trekking poles are useful for the loose gravel on the descent. We arrive at Mweka Camp for our last evening on the mountain.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Hotel
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, we continue descending to the Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. It can be wet and muddy at lower elevations, so gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. Shorts and t-shirts should be sufficient (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).
A vehicle will be waiting at Mweka gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 60 minutes).
