- Valley of the Kings - Begin your journey at the Necropolis of Thebes, located in the Valley of the Kings on Luxor’s West Bank. This ancient burial ground is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Luxor. Here, you will explore four royal tombs, including those of Ramses, Horemheb, Merenptah, and the famous King Tut. Discovered almost intact in 1922 by Howard Carter, Tutankhamen’s tomb is the only one of its kind in the Valley of the Kings. While Tut’s iconic golden mask is displayed at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, you can marvel at the royal mummy of the young king here.
- Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - Next, you’ll visit the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari. She was the only woman to rule Egypt as Pharaoh and was an ancestor of King Tutankhamen, belonging to the same dynasty.
- Colossi of Memnon - See the Colossi of Memnon, the two largest ancient statues in Egypt, dating back to the reign of King Amenhotep III.
- Temple of Karnak - After lunch, continue your tour to the Karnak Temples on Luxor’s East Bank. Considered one of the world’s greatest architectural achievements, the Karnak complex features temples built over various reigns. Highlights include the Avenue of Sphinxes, the Hypostyle Hall with its 134 massive columns, the Obelisks of Queen Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis I, the Temple of Amon adorned with lotus and papyrus motifs, the Granite Scarab of Amenophis III, and the Sacred Lake. Karnak stands out as one of Egypt’s most stunning ancient monuments.
- Obelisk of Thutmoses I - Admire the Obelisks of Queen Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis I, along with the Temple of Amon decorated with lotus and papyrus designs.
- Obelisk of Queen Hapshetsut - View the Obelisks of Queen Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis I, and the Temple of Amon with its lotus and papyrus decorations.
- Tomb of Ramases IX - Visit the Tomb of King Ramesses IX, the third pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty of Egypt’s New Kingdom. Originally named Amonhirkhopshef, he was the fifth son of Ramesses III and became crown prince after his four elder brothers predeceased him. The tomb is richly decorated with vibrant colors and intricate details, including the ceiling.
- Tomb of Merenptah - In Egyptian mythology, Ptah is the creator god of Memphis and the deity of craftsmen and architects. His falcon form was often placed in tombs to protect the deceased on their journey to the afterlife. Tomb 8 in the Valley of the Kings is the burial site of Pharaoh Merneptah, son of Ramesses II and Queen Isis-Nofret. Discovered by Howard Carter in 1903, the tomb features a significant reduction in lateral roots and an increase in the height of corridors and rooms. Merneptah abandoned the jogged axis design used since Horemheb’s time, opting for a single-axis layout with a notably wider entrance.
- Tomb of Ramses III - The tomb of Ramesses III, known as KV 11, is a complex structure in the Valley of the Kings. Famous since antiquity, its stunning decorations include colorful sunken reliefs depicting traditional ritual texts like the Litany of Ra and the Book of Gates, as well as scenes of Ramses before the gods. Unique to this tomb are secular scenes in the side rooms of the entrance corridor, showcasing foreign tributes, detailed pottery from the Aegean, the royal armory, boats, and blind harpists, earning it the nickname ‘Tomb of the Harpers.’
- Temple of Amun - Also known as the Karnak Temples, this site is considered one of the world’s greatest architectural masterpieces. Located on Luxor’s East Bank, the Karnak complex includes temples built over various reigns. Key features are the Avenue of Sphinxes, the Hypostyle Hall with its 134 colossal columns, the Obelisks of Queen Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis I, the Temple of Amon with lotus and papyrus designs, the Granite Scarab of Amenophis III, and the Sacred Lake. Karnak is one of Egypt’s most breathtaking ancient monuments.
