You will see the Bourbaki Museum from the outside and receive a short overview of its history.
- Lion Monument - Just a few steps further, visit the Lion Monument, which commemorates the fallen Swiss Guards during the French Revolution. At the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of modern times, many rulers across Europe had personal Swiss Guards, as the Pope still does. The Enlightenment led to the French Revolution starting in 1789. Three years later, the angry mob of Paris attacked the French King’s Palace, resulting in about 800 Swiss Guards being killed in action.
- Musegg Wall - A leisurely ten-minute uphill walk takes you to Musegg Hill, where you visit two of the Musegg Wall and Towers. Learn about the ancient fortification wall dating back to the early 15th century. Climb Schirmertower, walk along the defense path, and ascend to the top of the Clock Tower. Feel transported back to the Middle Ages and enjoy a beautiful view over the city, the Alps, and the midland. (From November to March, the Musegg Wall and Towers are closed and can be visited from the outside only.)
- Hirschenplatz - Continue to the heart of the Old Town and see the medieval houses with their façade paintings at Stag Square (Hirschenplatz).
- Kornmarkt - A few steps further at Town Hall Square (Kornmarkt), see the Town Hall and Tower dating back to the early 17th century. Learn about the impressive clock, which lacks a minute hand. A stone’s throw further, reach the Wine Market (Weinmarkt), once called the Fish Market. Discover why the old city fountains carry the best spring water of Lucerne and taste it yourself at the oldest fountain in the city.
- Reussbrücke - Pass the lower Wine Market, where a pillory once stood, and cross the river on the Reuss Bridge (Reussbruecke). See the river Reuss, the needle dam, the mill bridge (Spreuerbruecke), and two of the Musegg Towers.
- Ritterscher Palast - A few steps further, reach the Ritter Palace (Ritterscher Palast) for an inside visit. Learn about the history of this Florentine Palazzo dating back to the 16th century. Be guided through the “Danse Macabre,” a gallery of seven paintings by Jakob von Wyl. (Except on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and special events when the Ritter Palace is closed and can be visited from the outside only.)
- Jesuitenkirche - Next, visit the 17th-century Jesuit Church, the first Baroque church in Switzerland. The guide explains its history before you have the opportunity to enter and see the church from the inside. (Inside visits are restricted during mass services.)
- Chapel Bridge - A few steps upriver, cross the famous Chapel Bridge (Kapellbruecke) with its Water Tower. Hear interesting details about this former city fortification bridge with its paintings and the Water Tower, which once served as a prison.
- Peter’s Chapel - The tour ends at Rosengart Platz next to St. Peter’s Chapel, the first church in town dating back to the 12th century. See the Zur Gilgen House, the first private stone house in Lucerne, dating back to the early 16th century. Finally, learn why the Chapel Bridge is called Chapel Bridge. The guide is available for further information about Lucerne and will take you back to your hotel by public transportation or on foot.
