• Porta San Pietro - The southern gateway of Lucca’s walls: the grandest entrance to the Renaissance fortifications. Constructed in 1566, this gate leads to Pisa.

• Piazza Napoleone - Also known as “Piazza Grande”, this square has historically been the hub of the city’s political power. Today, it hosts cultural events and concerts, including the Lucca Summer Festival.

• Lucca’s Duomo (Cattedrale di San Martino) - The church’s facade is notable for its asymmetry; one of the 12th-century arches is smaller due to the pre-existing bell tower. Inside, you’ll find masterpieces like the funerary monument of Ilaria del Carretto, Ghirlandaio’s Sacred Conversation, Tintoretto’s Last Supper, and an altarpiece by Fra’ Bartolomeo. We will view the church from the outside, but feel free to enter if you wish!

• Torre delle Ore - Known as “the city of 100 churches”, Lucca’s medieval skyline was also marked by numerous towers built by noble families. These towers signified social status: the taller the tower, the more important the family.

• Chiesa di San Michele in Foro - Situated in the ancient Roman square of Lucca, Piazza San Michele in Foro, this church dates back to the 8th century and is dedicated to the archangel Michael. Atop the church is a 4-meter-high marble statue of the Archangel Michael with metal foil wings, depicted defeating a dragon. Legend says that on bright days, a glow from an ancient, never-found emerald can be seen emanating from the statue.

• Torre Guinigi - Located at the corner of Via Sant’Andrea and Via delle Chiavi d’Oro, this tower is easily recognizable by the trees growing on its top. Standing 45 meters tall, it requires climbing 230 steps to reach the top. Though the climb is challenging, the panoramic view is worth the effort! Ticket cost: 8€

• Piazza Anfiteatro - This elliptical square can be accessed through four vaulted doors. Beneath it lie the foundations of a 2nd-century AD Roman amphitheater where gladiator fights once took place, though the remains are no longer visible.

• Basilica of San Frediano - One of Lucca’s oldest places of worship, tradition holds that it was founded by San Frediano, an Irish prince and one of the city’s first bishops between 560 and 588. The basilica is first mentioned in 685 as “basilica Longobardorum”. Ticket cost: 3€
