- Majdanek State Museum - German concentration camp in Lublin, colloquially known as Majdanek, was established by Heinrich Himmler’s decision. Constructed in the autumn of 1941, the camp was initially named Kriegsgefangenenlager der Waffen SS Lublin, a prisoner-of-war camp, and was renamed Konzentrationslager Lublin, a concentration camp, in February 1943. Since October 1942, a women’s camp also operated on one of the fields. Although a children’s camp at Majdanek was never realized, Jewish, Belarusian, and Polish children from the Zamosc region were found among the adults. Prisoners came from 30 different countries, with most being citizens of Poland (mainly Poles and Jews), the Soviet Union, and Czechoslovakia (Jews).
