- Old Quarter Luang Prabang - Founded in 1353 as the capital of the Lan Xang kingdom, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Quarter is a delightful, walkable 1.5-square mile (4 km) town with tree-lined streets featuring a blend of French colonial buildings, traditional Lao-style temples, shops, and local markets. The stories shared by your guide as you explore will transport you to a bygone era, bringing the history of this ancient city to life.
- Wat Sensoukharam - Wat Sensoukharam exemplifies Lao Buddhist architecture and symbolizes the city’s profound connection to Theravada Buddhism. Built in the 18th century and dedicated to meditation, it’s often called the “Temple of 100,000 Treasures” due to its numerous sacred relics. Today, its peaceful courtyards, golden facade, and intricate carvings hold religious and cultural significance as a place of worship and ordination for local Buddhist monks.
- Royal Palace Museum - The Royal Palace Museum (or Haw Kham), constructed in 1904, was once the residence of the Lao royal family. The building merges traditional Lao and French colonial architectural styles, with beautiful gardens and intricate structural and decorative details reflecting the grandeur of Laos’ royal past. Today, it provides a fascinating insight into the life of the former monarchy, featuring a throne room, royal reception hall, and exhibits of personal artifacts once owned by the royal family.
- Wat Wisunalat - This exquisite temple is a late-1800s reconstruction of a much older temple dating back to 1513. Known for its unique architecture, the wat remains an active place of worship. Visitors can place their name on the board to request a blessing from the resident monks.
- Mount Phousi - Rising nearly 500 feet (150 m) high, Mount Phousi is a prominent landmark of Luang Prabang. Situated in the southwest end of the old city, it offers spectacular views of the old city, the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers, and surrounding mountains. The winding stairway is adorned with small shrines, Buddha statues, and religious offerings. At the summit, Wat Chom Si stupa, built by King Anourouth in 1804, is believed to enshrine sacred Buddhist relics.
- Mekong River Cruises - After your climb, unwind on a cruise aboard a traditional Mekong riverboat. As the late afternoon sun sets behind the mountains, the river transforms into beautiful pink and purple hues, creating a magical experience. Guests can enjoy a drink and light refreshments while aboard. Note: The $27 cruise ticket, and the cost of food and drink are not included in the tour price. If opting out of the cruise, visitors can purchase and enjoy a selection of food and drinks by the riverside while waiting.
- Luang Prabang Night Market - The Luang Prabang Night Market offers an engaging cultural experience where visitors can bargain hunt, connect with the local community, sample traditional street food, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the town. It’s also an excellent place to shop for locally made goods, including beautifully woven textiles, jewelry, hand-carved wooden bowls, foldable paper lanterns, souvenirs, and all things Lao!

The guided tour encompasses all the key historical and cultural sites, along with numerous enjoyable extras! Participants will explore the royal palace, ancient temples, and serene monasteries, engage in the vibrant atmosphere of morning and night markets, and peruse local handicrafts and artwork. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to ascend Mount Phousi for breathtaking views of the town and river. Later, they can unwind on the Mekong in a traditional long boat (optional) or at a riverside café, and conclude their adventure by savoring the exotic flavors of Laos through delicious street food provided by local vendors.
