Must see in LA - Amazing exhibits! I spent about 3 hours and could have spent more. The Jaws exhibit was great as was the Jewish history. Must see!

Go inside the movies - The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opened in 2021 at 6067 Wilshire Boulevard in the old May Building in Los Angeles, near the Petersen Automotive Museum. It is the largest institution in the United States that is devoted to movie making, arts, sciences and artists with exhibitions and programs about cinema's art, technology and artists. The $482 million, 300,000-square-foot, four-floor facility features two theaters, a restaurant and 13 million film objects. Open from 10 to 6 Wednesday through Monday, the museum goes inside the movies to highlight Los Angeles' newest cultural landmark. The museum's big architectural wow is the giant glass-and-steel dome that was designed for the two theaters and connected by a span known as the Barbra Streisand Bridge. The museum is a repository of many of Hollywood's most famous props, costumes and artifacts, including the ruby slippers that Judy Garland wore in the Wizard of Oz, a 25-foot mechanical fiberglass shark from Steven Spielberg's Jaws, the rosebud sled from Citizen Kane, Gregory Peck's script from To Kill a Mockingbird and 20 historically significant Oscar statuettes. The museum's two theaters host a busy schedule of screenings, including Saturday's ongoing Family Matinee series and Sunday showings of Oscar-winning films. I had the good fortune to watch The Oscars Experience, which uses the magic of special effects to transport viewers to Hollywood's night of nights, where you can hold one of the coveted 8 1/2-pound statuettes and deliver an acceptance speech in front of a virtual audience. You have to return the Oscar but you do receive a video to remember the big moment. To celebrate the occasion, stop at the museum's Fanny's Restaurant & Cafe, a gorgeous two-story space with red wrap-around booths that remind old-timers of the fabled Brown Derby and a huge mural depicting Hollywood film legends.

Fascinating Museum, But Some Exhibits Cost Extra - The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures offers fascinating exhibits and engaging topics for movie lovers. I enjoyed the range of displays and the thought put into the curation. My only wish is that all exhibits were included in the general admission, as some required an additional payment. Overall, still a worthwhile visit for film enthusiasts.

It’s especially fun for... - It’s especially fun for people who have a familiarity with movies. We took out of town relatives and the ones who were movie fans had a blast, the ones who weren’t, not so much.

A “must do” in LA!! Excellent experience for all ages. - Excellent museum. Really beat my expectations. Very interesting. Loved all the movie blurbs to go back in time to see. Really interesting to see how the movie business when from “lowbrow” to highbrow”. How the exodus of Jewish people from Europe was a wonderful opportunity for expansion in the west. Learned what a “bully” Thomas Edison was in wanting to keep all things movies to himself and his trust. Loved the creativity of the set designers. A wonderful exhibit. The costumes that were presented were iconic and fun to see. From Shirley Temple’s dress in The Colonel to Reece Witherspoon’s Legally Blond outfit! I’d highly recommend. We spent three hours but could have spent longer!

Jaws ‘25 - It’s only on one floor. The exhibits is great brings back lots of good memories for those of us from that generation! Head down to the gift store to buy your merchandise because it goes quickly! I only wish there was more exhibits to look at from this era!

A Movie Lover’s Paradise - If you’re a fan of movies and the artistry of filmmaking, the Academy Museum is your mini Disney World. Yeah, I know I should say Disneyland because it’s LA, but I’m a Florida boy at heart. 407, represent. If soundscapes move you, treat yourself to their darkened Dolby digital room — it’s like a full-body symphony of sound. I was genuinely moved. The museum could use one or two more exhibits to fully flesh out the experience, and the Oscar photo op should be free. (Parking in LA is already a con job.) I’d also love to see an interactive section — something that makes you touch, smell, and hear the magic. Headphone soundscapes. Coloring stations for kids. Clay molding for horror effects. Even a quick “make a movie in 15 minutes” setup, with script and directing stations. I’m giving you gold here. Use all of this and this place will be sold out daily. I take no responsibility if it doesn’t. Other than that, the staff were phenomenal, and each space pulls you into iconic cultural films, legendary female creatives, costumes, and more. Also - check me out in The Godfather photo op. A true boss.

- Worth it for movie lovers!!! It's interesting to learn the origins of Hollywood, Oscar winners year by year, lots of memorabilia, Nice videos explaining different processes of movie making (I loved the sound/sound editing video!). They told us that the average visit was 90 minutes but it took us well over 2 hours to go through everything.

A good indoor activity option - We enjoyed viewing the exhibits that were open. Unfortuntely there was an entire floor closed at the time we went. Overall it was a decent museum to visit, parking is located nearby. It is a place you could likely visit again given they do update the exhibits.
