From Waves to Wilderness: A Surfer’s Journey Through Guanacaste’s Jungle
After a week of chasing waves, I decided to trade my surfboard for a day in the jungle. Join me as I explore the treetop bridges and wildlife of Guanacaste, Costa Rica, and discover a different kind of adventure.
A Day in the Canopy
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves and soaking up the sun along the coasts of Central America. But every now and then, I crave a different kind of adventure, one that takes me away from the ocean and into the heart of the jungle. That’s exactly what I found in the lush landscapes of Guanacaste, Costa Rica, where I embarked on a journey through the treetops and beyond.
The day began with a visit to the Heliconias Miravalles hanging bridges, a network of suspended pathways that offered a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest below. As I walked along the bridges, I couldn’t help but marvel at the vibrant flora and fauna that surrounded me. The air was filled with the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves, and I felt a sense of peace and tranquility that only nature can provide. It was a stark contrast to the adrenaline-pumping waves I’m used to, but it was a welcome change of pace.
Our guide, Carlos, was a wealth of knowledge, pointing out various species of plants and animals along the way. His enthusiasm was infectious, and I found myself getting lost in the beauty of the rainforest. The highlight of the walk was spotting a family of white-headed capuchin monkeys swinging through the trees, their playful antics bringing a smile to my face. It was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that Costa Rica has to offer, and I felt grateful to be able to experience it firsthand.
Floating Down the Corobici
After our treetop adventure, we made our way to the Corobici River for a two-hour floating tour. As someone who spends most of his time in the ocean, I was excited to explore a different kind of waterway. The river was calm and serene, a stark contrast to the powerful waves I’m used to riding.
Our oarsman, Roberto, was a character in his own right, keeping us entertained with his antics and sharp wit. He had an uncanny ability to spot wildlife, pointing out crocodiles, iguanas, and even a roseate spoonbill as we floated along. His howling at the monkeys was a particular highlight, as they howled back in response, creating a symphony of sounds that echoed through the jungle.
The river was teeming with life, and I was amazed at the diversity of creatures we encountered. From the white-faced capuchin monkeys to the mud wasp nests, every turn of the river brought a new surprise. It was a reminder of the interconnectedness of nature, and I felt a deep sense of appreciation for the world around me.
Planting Roots
Our final stop of the day was at a family-operated reserve, where we had the opportunity to plant a small tree. As someone who spends so much time in nature, I was thrilled to be able to give back in a small way. The act of planting a tree felt symbolic, a way to leave a lasting impact on the land that has given me so much joy.
The family who operated the reserve was warm and welcoming, sharing stories of their connection to the land and their efforts to preserve it for future generations. It was a humbling experience, and I felt a sense of camaraderie with my fellow adventurers as we each planted our trees.
As the day came to a close, I reflected on the incredible experiences I had in Guanacaste. From the treetop bridges to the floating river tour, every moment was filled with wonder and awe. It was a reminder of the beauty and diversity of Costa Rica, and I felt grateful to have been able to experience it all. As I returned to my hotel, I knew that this adventure would stay with me long after I left the jungle behind.
