Unforgettable Day Trip to Monsaraz and Évora with the Best Guide, Rui! - We had an incredible day with our guide, Rui. He arrived right on time—actually a few minutes early—and from the start, he was professional, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. It was just me and my wife in a very comfortable van, and Rui’s driving and conversation made the trip smooth and enjoyable. Our first stop was the medieval hilltop village of Monsaraz, and it was absolutely breathtaking. The village sits high above the Alentejo plains, with 360-degree views that stretch all the way into Spain. The cobblestone streets, whitewashed homes, and quiet atmosphere made it feel like we’d stepped back in time. We were lucky to visit when it wasn’t crowded—just a local school group exploring the village. Inside the fortress, we could see where they hold the running of the bulls and the bullfights at the end of the festival. Standing on the castle walls, looking out over vineyards, olive groves, and cork trees, was the highlight of the day. After Monsaraz, Rui took us to Évora for lunch. He recommended a local restaurant that turned out to be fantastic. We tried the oxtail and the famous black pork cheeks. Rui explained how the black Iberian pigs eat acorns from cork trees, which gives the meat its rich, nutty flavor. It was one of the best meals we’ve had in Portugal. In Évora, we explored the Roman Temple, which is nearly 2,000 years old, and the Cathedral, where you can climb to the rooftop for incredible views of the city. We also visited the Chapel of Bones, which was fascinating, eerie, and deeply moving. Rui shared the stories and history behind each site, and his knowledge made the experience come alive. It is a long drive—about an hour and a half each way—but it’s a beautiful one, passing through vineyards, olive trees, almond trees, and cork oak forests. Getting out of Lisbon and seeing the Alentejo countryside was well worth the time. Overall, this was one of the best days of our entire trip. The private tour was comfortable, informative, and perfectly paced. Rui was an amazing guide, and we can’t recommend him highly enough. If you’re considering a day trip from Lisbon, this one should be at the top of your list.

Rui is an Exceptional Guide - Rui was an exceptional guide with a wealth of knowledge in history, food and culture. He answered our many questions, accommodated our stop for ceramic shopping and his attention to detail was fantastic (even having the ac prepared for us in the car during a hot day). This tour with Rui was the highlight of our trip to Portugal.

Charming countryside side day trip - Wonderful experience with Joao touring Monsaraz and Evora. We enjoyed the drive through the countryside and learning about the history of the region and the agriculture (cork, olives, almonds, wheat). Monsaraz is a charming little walled village overlooking the lake with shops selling local products. Joao recommended a fabulous restaurant in Evora and guided us through the town pointing out details that we would have otherwise missed. It is worthwhile to climb the steps to the roof of the cathedral and to visit all levels of the chapel of bones museum to view the nativity sets and artwork.
