Palacio Nacional e Jardins de Queluz - This is the first monument to explore, taking approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. The next monument awaits your visit.
The National Palace of Queluz, also known as Queluz Royal Palace, is a Portuguese royal residence located in the municipality of Sintra. It was constructed between 1747 and 1760, designed by architect Jean-Baptiste Robillon at the request of Prince Pietro (Pedro) III (1717-1786), the husband of Queen Maria I (1734-1816), who transformed an existing country residence.
Dubbed the “Versailles of Portugal,” the palace served primarily as a venue for royal entertainment, hosting concerts, bullfights, and fireworks, especially during religious holidays or special events.
Queen Maria I resided here for many years, although the palace was otherwise not frequently visited by the royal family.
Today, it continues to host concerts and serves as a reception venue for foreign dignitaries. It also houses the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art.

- Palácio e Parque Biester - A palace restored and opened in 2023
- Castelo dos Mouros - Historical evidence shows that this area was occupied by Neolithic communities as early as 5,000 BC, with artifacts still present today. By 1200 BC, a village existed here, leaving behind numerous ceramic fragments. The Muslim conquest of Al-Andalus began in the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century. The castle was founded in the 10th century under the administration of the Caliphate of Cordoba. In 1147, Arab control of the castle ended with the conquest of Lisbon by D. Afonso Henriques. In 1287, D. Dinis gifted the city of Sintra to Queen Santa Isabel. In 1995, the Castle and the Serra de Sintra were designated a UNESCO Cultural Landscape - World Heritage Site. In 2007, the castle’s rehabilitation began under the ownership of Parques de Sintra, and in 2013, it reopened to the public with visitor-friendly renovations.

- Park and National Palace of Pena - This monument offers a visit to the stunning gardens and the Palace.
Constructed after 1840 by Maria II of Braganza (1819-1853) as a wedding gift for her husband, King Ferdinand II of Portugal (also known as Ferdinand II of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha; 1819-1885), on the ruins of a 15th-century Gerosolimitan convent, the palace was designed by German architect and baron Ludwig von Eschwege. It is protected by UNESCO and was included in the World Heritage Site (along with the entire historic center of Sintra) in 1995. On July 7, 2007, it was named one of the 7 wonders of Portugal.
In 2020, it was recognized as one of the 101 wonders by Lonely Planet.
Ticket price: 7.5 EUR + 7 EUR to visit both the gardens and the palace. Visitors can choose to visit only the gardens.
- Quinta da Regaleira - A magnificent palace and chapel in a romantic style, set in a park with lakes, caves, wells, and fountains. Built by Carvalho Monteiro at the beginning of the century as a private residence, the estate remained privately owned until it was acquired by the local council in 1997.
With the assistance of Italian architect Luigi Manini, the villa and surrounding property were transformed into the captivating site seen today.
It’s hard to believe that such a grand and opulent building was, until recently, a private residence rather than a royal palace.
The four-hectare property is as intriguing as the palace itself, featuring formal gardens and wild woods crisscrossed by paths, adorned bridges, caves, lakes, waterfalls, and fountains, all nestled among giant ferns and American redwood trees.
The grounds also contain a network of underground tunnels and two large wells, once believed to be used for esoteric initiation ceremonies.

The flora is diverse, with many unique species, and is the subject of numerous studies, including geomorphology.
