- Miradouro de Santa Luzia - Featuring a simple, slender white facade with red doors, the plaza surrounding the church is likely to have caught your eye – lush green shrubs, a blue reflecting pool, and vibrant bougainvillea cascading over a trellis create a serene atmosphere. Many regard this terrace as the most romantic spot in the city!
- Arco do Castelo - If visiting the castle is on your agenda, now is an ideal time. Although the castle’s interior isn’t part of this tour, there are a few bonus stories to enjoy once inside. The ticket office is through the arch, and admissions information is available via the Learn More button. Clicking it will also provide more details about how this tour operates.
- History of Lisbon Mural by Nuno Saraiva - This tunnel is truly unique! Lisbon’s entire history is captured in a delightful comic strip panel by Nuno Saraiva, covering both walls.
- Alfama - As we walk, you’ll notice street art on nearly every wall. Some of it is truly Art with a capital A, while some can be described as the work of enthusiastic amateurs.
- Azulejos do Largo das Alcaçarias - A hallmark of Spanish and Portuguese architecture, these Azulejos adorn various structures, from churches and palaces to ordinary houses and subway stations. The glazed tiles often depict significant events in Portugal’s history.
- Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco) - This is Praça do Comercio. Constructed in the early 1500s to manage the new trade with India, this location symbolizes Portugal at its peak. A nation of just a few million people dominated the entire spice trade from India, generating immense wealth that rivaled the gold and slave trades. In the 1500s, spices accounted for nearly half of Portugal’s state revenue.
- Cais das Colunas - These are the Cais das Colunas, inspired by the legendary bronze pillars of Solomon’s Temple. Instead of heading there now, take a seat on the steps directly ahead, facing the water. Historically, these steps welcomed kings and queens into Lisbon. We are literally following in the footsteps of royalty.
- Arco da Rua Augusta - Initially designed as a simple belltower during reconstruction plans, this intricately-carved structure evolved into something much grander. Naturally, this grandeur meant it took nearly a century to complete!
- Casa Do Licor Pastel De Nata - Many of Portugal’s sweets are egg-based, but why? In the 18th century, convents and monasteries used numerous egg whites to starch robes, and the leftovers were used in food! Pastel de Natas emerged from this trend, created by monks as a breakfast treat right here in Lisbon, at Jerónimos Monastery!
- A Ginjinha - In the mid-1800s, the Portuguese prohibited their colonies from importing alcohol to monopolize the market. This posed a challenge for wine merchants, who had to set high prices to compensate for the loss of business from imported wines. One such merchant, Francisco Espinheira, sought a way to reduce costs.
- Praca da Figueira - The large equestrian statue at the square’s center was unveiled in 1971. It depicts none other than King John…. Do you recall the battle of the 3 Johns? This is the victorious John!
