- Largo do Carmo - Largo do Carmo is one of Lisbon’s most stunning squares. Visitors can learn about the 1755 earthquake (the Carmo church has been a ruin since then), the aqueduct system, and the city’s fountains and galleries, as well as the 1974 democratic revolution (the last Portuguese dictator was captured here). Visitors can learn about the 1755 earthquake (the Carmo church has been a ruin since then), the aqueduct system, and the city’s fountains and galleries, as well as the 1974 democratic revolution (the last Portuguese dictator was captured here). There’s also the chance to visit the neo-gothic Elevador de Santa Justa (constructed in 1902) and enjoy breathtaking views.
- Elevador de Santa Justa - The neo-Gothic Santa Justa Elevator is the most renowned viewpoint in downtown Lisbon. It is the city’s only vertical street lift, built in 1902 and designed by Raul Mésnier, an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel.
- Chiado - The Chiado district is the most sought-after and priciest area in old town Lisbon. It offers not only beautiful viewpoints but also historic cafes and bookstores, boutiques, grand theaters, and more.
- Cidade Baixa - The Baixa district was completely destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. It was reconstructed in a grid pattern with elegant squares by the Marquis of Pombal (the king’s prime minister at the time). It serves as the commercial hub of the city and is the only flat district in Lisbon’s old town.
- Alfama - Alfama is the heart of Lisbon, the oldest neighborhood, a charming place with narrow streets, hidden courtyards, pitched rooftops, and maze-like alleyways.
- Miradouro da Senhora do Monte - This lookout point is ideal for relaxation and offers one of the best panoramic views in Lisbon. It’s a fantastic spot to see the São Jorge Castle, the Tagus River, and delightful neighborhoods like Mouraria, Baixa, Chiado, among others.
- 25 de Abril Bridge - Cross the April 25th Bridge, a massive and picturesque suspension bridge resembling the Golden Gate Bridge, connecting the north and south sides of Lisbon. It was renamed after the revolution day (April 25th) that ended the Salazar dictatorship in 1974.
- Santuario Nacional de Cristo Rei - The site of the Christ the King Statue (Cristo Rei) offers the best viewpoint over Lisbon. From here, enjoy a stunning view of the city and the Tagus River. This statue, inspired by the Brazilian one, was erected in 1959 to thank God for sparing Portugal from the horrors of WWII. There is a fee to ascend, but the view is equally impressive from the base.
- Pastéis de Belém - A visit to Lisbon is incomplete without tasting the most well-guarded secret of Portuguese pastries, the Pastéis de Belém. Originating in 1837 in a small bakery, visitors can try one (included in the price). There is also a local ritual for eating these delicacies that will be shared.
- Mosteiro dos Jeronimos - Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is Portugal’s most famous monument. It is a tribute by King Manuel to the great explorers of the 15th century (including the sea route to India discovered by Vasco da Gama in 1498). Visitors will learn about Portuguese maritime discoveries and visit the church where Vasco da Gama is buried (the monastery itself is not entered, but the church is visited).
- Torre de Belem - The Torre de Belém (Belem Tower) is a 500-year-old fortification built on a small island in the Tagus River. It was part of a defense system at the river’s mouth and served as a ceremonial gateway into Lisbon. It is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Please note that entry into the monument is not included.
- Padrao dos Descobrimentos - The Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) was constructed to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Henry the Navigator’s death. It features representations of all the significant figures who contributed to major Portuguese achievements, such as Vasco da Gama, Bartolomeu Dias, Pedro Álvares Cabral, Ferdinand Magellan, among others.
