Discovering Setúbal: A Family Adventure

Our journey began with a scenic drive to Setúbal, a charming city that serves as the gateway to the Arrábida region. As we arrived, the vibrant Mercado do Livramento immediately caught our attention. This bustling market is a feast for the senses, with colorful stalls brimming with fresh seafood, fruits, and local delicacies. My children were fascinated by the variety of fish on display, and it was a perfect opportunity to teach them about the importance of sustainable fishing practices.

After exploring the market, we made our way to the Santuario Nacional de Cristo Rei. The panoramic views of Lisbon from the sanctuary were breathtaking, and it was a great spot for a family photo. The kids enjoyed the open space to run around, and I appreciated the peaceful atmosphere that allowed us to take a moment to reflect and appreciate the beauty of our surroundings.

Exploring the Natural Beauty of Arrábida

Leaving Setúbal, we ventured into the Serra da Arrábida, a stunning natural park known for its lush green hills and crystal-clear waters. The drive through the park was a highlight of our trip, with several stops along the way to take in the magnificent views and snap some family photos. The kids loved exploring the scenic trails, and it was a wonderful way to introduce them to the joys of hiking and nature appreciation.

One of our stops was at the Forte de Sao Filipe, a historic fort offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The children were thrilled to explore the fort’s ancient walls and imagine themselves as knights defending the castle. It was a fun and educational experience that sparked their imaginations and provided a glimpse into the region’s rich history.

Savoring the Flavors of Azeitão

Our final destination was the charming village of Azeitão, renowned for its wine and olive production. We visited a small family-run winery where we learned about the production of Moscatel, a sweet and aromatic fortified wine. While the adults enjoyed a tasting session, the kids were kept entertained with a tour of the vineyard and a chance to sample some delicious grape juice.

We also visited the Azulejos de Azeitao, an atelier dedicated to the traditional art of Portuguese tile-making. The children were captivated by the intricate designs and even had the chance to try their hand at painting their own tiles. It was a creative and engaging activity that allowed them to express their artistic side while learning about a unique aspect of Portuguese culture.

As we made our way back to Lisbon, I reflected on the day’s adventures and the wonderful memories we had created as a family.
