A Family Adventure Through Sintra’s Hidden Gems and Coastal Charms
When I heard about the Sintra Wine Tour, I knew it was the perfect blend of history, culture, and family-friendly fun. Join me as I share our adventure through the charming streets of Sintra, the royal gardens of Queluz, and the coastal beauty of Cascais.
Discovering Queluz: A Royal Start to Our Adventure
Our journey began with a delightful twist. Due to fire hazard warnings, the iconic Pena Palace was closed, but our guide Mauro had a wonderful alternative up his sleeve—Palácio de Queluz. As a former schoolteacher, I found the rich history of the Portuguese royal family particularly fascinating. Mauro’s storytelling brought the past to life, making it an engaging experience for both adults and children. The gardens were a hit with my kids, who loved exploring the maze-like paths and spotting peacocks strutting around. Queluz was a hidden gem that set the tone for a day filled with discovery and delight.
Savoring Sintra: A Culinary Delight
Next, we ventured into the heart of Sintra, a charming town that felt like stepping into a fairy tale. We indulged in the famous pastel de nata and the “Piriquita pillow” at the iconic Piriquita bakery. These sweet treats were a hit with my kids, who couldn’t get enough of the flaky pastries. Mauro had arranged a lunch that was nothing short of a feast. The table was laden with seafood platters, baked goods, and a variety of drinks. The hospitality was heartwarming, and the kids were thrilled with the special attention they received, including a surprise dessert. It was a perfect blend of local flavors and warm welcomes.
Wine Tasting and Coastal Charms
Our adventure continued with a visit to Mare & Corvus for a wine tasting. While the kids enjoyed a juice tasting, I savored the unique flavors of Portugal’s wines. The salty and smoky notes of the reds were a delightful surprise. Our final stop was the coastal town of Cascais, where the soft sandy beach and walkable streets provided a perfect end to our day. The kids loved playing on the beach, and I enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the marina. Cascais was bustling, but its charm was undeniable. Mauro’s knowledge and enthusiasm made the day unforgettable, and I left with a deeper appreciation for Portugal’s culture and hospitality.
