The buildings were reconstructed after the quake, and Plaza de Armas is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Cathedral: The original cathedral’s construction began in 1535 and was expanded in 1564, inspired by the cathedral in Seville, Spain. It suffered damage in the 1687 earthquake and was nearly destroyed in the 1746 quake but was swiftly rebuilt to its current form.
• Miraflores: A neighborhood featuring modern glass-and-steel commercial buildings alongside charming old colonial homes and abundant green spaces. Here, you’ll find upscale shops and restaurants offering “New Peruvian” cuisine, gaining global recognition in culinary circles. Beautiful parks and green spaces line the cliff tops overlooking the ocean, where hang gliders often soar above surfers in the waves below. Prices tend to be higher in this affluent area.
• Santo Domingo: Established in 1540 on land granted to Dominican Friar Vicente Valverde by Francisco Pizarro, the church and monastery of Santo Domingo are among the oldest and most historic in Lima. Here, you can see the relics of Saint Rose of Lima, San Juan Macias, and Saint Martin de Porres, the first black saint in the Americas. The statue of Saint Rose was gifted to Santo Domingo by Pope Clement X. The monastery is renowned for its tile mosaics depicting the life of St. Dominic, Santo Domingo de Guzman, founder of the Dominican order. Inside the vibrantly painted cloister is a serene green garden.
• Huaca Pucllana: The pyramid-shaped temple of Huaca Pucllana is located in the heart of Miraflores, now surrounded by buildings. Constructed from adobe and clay bricks—a material that would not have lasted over 1,000 years in any other climate—the pyramid is built on seven staggered platforms. The Lima Culture, responsible for the pyramid’s construction, thrived on Peru’s central coast between AD 200 and AD 700. Artifacts found here indicate its significance as both a ceremonial and administrative center.
