Huaraz - This journey follows the Pan American highway north through the stunning Pacific coastal desert. As the terrain elevates, pass through the Cordillera Negra (Black Range) at Conococha Pass (4020 m) into the Santa Valley and Huaraz (3100m). Beyond the pass, enjoy a delightful view of the Cordillera Blanca mountains, some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery. Alternatively, fly with LATAM-PERU, a 50-minute flight. Huaraz - Trekking to Laguna Wilcacoha (3725 m) - Camping in Cordillera Negra back to Huaraz
Laguna Wilcacocha - For acclimatization, visit the Cordillera Negra, offering a magnificent view of the Cordillera Blanca. Spot wild ducks on the picturesque lake. Wilcacocha, due to its location, is an exceptional viewpoint for the Cordillera Blanca, allowing identification of peaks such as Huandoy, Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Hualcan, Copa, Vallunaraju, Ocshapalca, Ranrapalca, Palcaraju, Churup, and more. Huaraz (3100 m) - Private transport to Pitec (3850 m) - Trekking Hike to Laguna Churup (4450 m), return to Hotel in Huaraz
Laguna Churup - The trail to Laguna Churup is a classic hike in the Cordillera Blanca, challenging yet excellent for acclimatization. Drive to the village of Llupa, then begin the hike on an ancient Inca trail to Laguna (Lake) Churup. The trail narrows and steepens, with a small section featuring fixed ropes. It’s one of the most beautiful spots in this diverse mountain region. Churup Peak rises above the lake, a rugged rocky mountain with glaciers and cliffs 5,400 meters above sea level. Continue climbing and loop to the Churup summit trail before returning to the trailhead and back to Huaraz for the night. Overnight stay at a hotel.
Acclimatization days: Huaraz - Transfer to Paso Punta Olimpica (4736 m) - Nevado Mateo (5150 m), one-day guided ascent
Huaraz - Transfer to Yuracoral (3850 m) - Cebollapampa - Transfer via Portachuelo Pass (4650 m) – Amapampa Camp (4250 m)
Camp Amapampa - Trekking to Punta Union Pass (4750 m) - Taullipampa Camp (4250 m) - Alpamayo Base Camp (4300 m)
Alpamayo - Today, cross Punta Union Pass. From the pass, view the entire Santa Cruz valley and the trail ahead. After a photo stop at the pass, descend to Taullipampa camp (4,250 m) and continue to Alpamayo Base Camp. From here, Alpamayo, the expedition’s goal, is visible. Camp at Quebrada Arhuecocha (4,300 m). Overnight camping.
Alpamayo Base Camp - Ascend to Alpamayo Moraine Camp (4900 m)
Alpamayo - Enjoy a hearty breakfast and prepare expedition equipment for Alpamayo, assisted by a local team (porters, cook, and guides). Set out for the moraine after a light lunch at Base Camp. The trail crosses the steep moraine at the glacier’s tongue to Moraine Camp (4,900 m). Overnight camping.
Moraine Camp - Ascend to Alpamayo High Camp (5300 m)
Alpamayo - Alpamayo High Camp is situated on the steep glacier at the base of Alpamayo and Quitaraju. Due to the glacier’s constant shrinkage, conditions vary each year. High Camp offers magnificent views, with the summit seemingly within reach! Dinner is early, as an early rise is necessary for the long day ahead. High Camp (5,300 m). Overnight camping.
High Camp - Ascend to Alpamayo Summit (5947 m) - High Camp (5300 m) or Descend to Base Camp (4300 m)
Alpamayo - Summit day! One possible route is the French route, a 60 to 80-degree ice wall narrowing at the top. Above the wall, conquer a few meters to the highest point of the narrow ridge. At the summit, enjoy a magnificent view of the Cordillera Blanca! The neighboring peak of Quitaraju (6,036 m) is almost within reach; to the southwest, see the remarkable summit of Huascarán (6,768 m). After a brief rest and photos at the summit, quickly return to High Camp via a rappel down the ascent route. In good weather, the climb to the summit and return to base camp can be completed before noon. The ascent takes 5-6 hours, while the descent takes about 2-3 hours. If participants are tired, an additional night at High Camp is possible. If everyone feels fine, which is common, descend to Alpamayo Base Camp (4,300 m). Overnight camping.
Reserve or Rest day in Alpamayo Base Camp (4300 m)
Alpamayo - An extra day is scheduled in case of bad weather or to return to Base Camp if the previous night was spent at High Camp. Overnight camping.
Base Camp - Descent through via Quebrada Santa Cruz - Cashapampa - Transfer to Huaraz
Huaraz - Rise early to begin the hike, descending through the Santa Cruz valley to Cashapampa (about 6 hours). In this village, a minibus awaits to transport the group and local expedition team back to Huaraz. Lodging at the hotel. Overnight stay at a hotel.
Rest Day in Huaraz - Relax option go to the Baños Termales
Huaraz - Rest day in Huaraz. Optional: Rock climbing at the Chancas walls, a classic spot for rock climbing enthusiasts. This area is 40 minutes north of Huaraz, developed by the guides of Don Bosco in the Andes (a non-profit organization promoting tourism) in 1997. It features 8 developed routes of varying difficulties. It’s a great place to enjoy a peaceful day in nature and then visit the local hot springs to relax sore muscles. Overnight stay at a hotel.
Huaraz (3100 m) - Transfer via Quebrada Llanganuco - Ascend to Chopicalqui Moraine Camp (4900 m)
Chopicalqui - After breakfast, prepare mountaineering equipment; Huaraz (3100 m) - Transfer via Quebrada Llanganuco - Trekking to Chopicalqui Base Camp (4350 m) - Continue ascending to Chopicalqui Moraine Camp (4900 m), with private transport taking 3-3.5 hours and the climb to Moraine Camp of Chopicalqui taking 5 hours. Overnight camping.
Moraine Camp - Ascend to Chopicalqui High Camp (5350 m)
Chopicalqui - First, climb over the rocky moraine to the glacier. Then, traverse the glacier’s various slopes, crossing crevasses to camp on the glacier at High Camp. 5-6 hours. Overnight camping.
High Camp - Ascend to Chopicalqui Summit (6345 m) - Base Camp (4350m)
Chopicalqui - Chopicalqui is a challenging mountain, marking the expedition’s culmination. Climb to the summit, navigating seracs and crevasses, and tackling technical walls. The final section features an 8-10 meter slope at 75º -80º. Descend to High Camp or Moraine Camp and continue to Base Camp. 10-13 hours today. Overnight camping.
Base Camp Chopicalqui - Transfer via Quebrada Llanganuco - Huaraz
Huaraz - Prepare to depart early from Moraine Camp or Base Camp to the highway, where a private bus awaits. Bid farewell to the Llanganuo Valley. Lodging at the hotel in Huaraz. Overnight stay at a hotel.
Huaraz - By bus 8-hour ride to Lima. Option to take a 50-minute flight with LATAM. Arrival in Lima
Lima - Options: Flight or bus. Flights are via LC-Peru and last 50 minutes. Overnight stay at a hotel.
