Experience the stunning view over Ålesund from Aksla mountain. At the viewpoint, you’ll be captivated by the beautiful city. Here, you can enjoy a 360-degree view. The weather changes, but the beauty remains constant. There’s so much to see, from the surrounding islands and passing boats to the snow-capped mountains. As night falls, the twinkling lights in the houses create a magical atmosphere, and the sunsets are spectacular as the sun slowly dips into the sea, turning everything orange. It’s a real-life adventure.
Sunrises are equally enchanting as the sun illuminates house after house. Ålesund is beautiful at any time of day. -
Alesund - Driving time: 15 minutes
Waldehuset was the only house in the eastern part of the town that survived the great fire on January 23, 1904. The entire town of Ålesund was ablaze. Waldehuset, situated in the midst of a large area of wooden houses, was the only one untouched by the flames.
Come and hear the incredible story of the Miracle House in Aalesund. -
Alesund - Driving time: 10 minutes
We drive through the city, exploring many streets, admiring the beautiful houses, and crossing the famous Hellebroen to the other side of the city. The picturesque Brosundet divides the city in two, leading out to the city lighthouse.
On the night of January 23, 1904, a devastating fire swept through Ålesund, and within 16 hours, 850 houses were reduced to ashes, leaving 10,000 people homeless. By 1907, most of the town center had been rebuilt. The architects were inspired by both national romantic impulses and the modern Art Nouveau style of the time in Europe. The buildings are characterized by towers, spires, and imaginative, colorful ornaments. It’s important to look up in the streets to appreciate the small details that make it all so special. Ålesund is renowned for its unique architecture and holds a special place in Norwegian and international architectural history. -
Brosundet i Alesund - Driving time: 10 minutes
Molja lighthouse is located at the far end of the pier at the entrance to Ålesund. This pier dates back to 1950, while the current lighthouse was built in 1937 and automated in 1982. However, lighthouses have been here since 1858.
Today, the lighthouse has been transformed into a hotel room with room service. Regardless of the weather, it’s a fascinating place, offering some of the most beautiful sunsets.
From this part of Ålesund, fishing boats used to come in. The area is known for its rich fishing grounds. In the 1950s, the entire Brosundet was filled with fishing boats seeking shelter or delivering their catch. The lighthouse guided them safely, as well as boats passing by Ålesund.
There are also restroom facilities available here. -
Aalesund Church - Driving time: 10 minutes
Aalesund’s beautiful church was built in 1909. The original church, built in 1854, was destroyed in the 1904 fire. The current church seats 800 people. The stone used comes from areas around Kristiansund, a bit further north of Aalesund. The church is located on Apøya, on a hill above the city, and can be both seen and heard from most parts of the city. -
Alnes - Driving time: 20 minutes
Visit the viewpoint to admire the beautiful Alnes and Alnes lighthouse. The lighthouse is nestled among houses, with high mountains on one side and the open sea stretching as far as the eye can see on the other. The nature here is both beautiful and powerful. Being close to the sea, you can hear the fresh sea air whistling. The waves crash over the rocks, some of which are enormous, sparking curiosity about their origins. The nature here is pristine. Alnes lighthouse now limits entry to only 8 people at a time, and only at specific times. Visitors can admire the magnificent lighthouse from the outside but cannot go inside. -
Alnes Lighthouse - Driving time: 5 minutes
We drive along the high stone wall that protects the houses from large waves during bad weather. The narrow road winds around the island, revealing the landscape. Feel the fresh sea air as you step outside. It’s truly beautiful here.
The lighthouse has been operational for boats and ships on Alnes since 1853. Her Majesty the Queen of Norway inaugurated the new visitor center at Alnes Lighthouse on October 7, 2016. It features an exciting new signal building that blends seamlessly into the terrain.
To ensure the new visitor center complements the surroundings and existing facilities, much of the 700-square-meter building is built into the ground.
Artists Ørnulf Opdahl and Sidsel Colbjørnsen, who reside on-site, have donated an art collection that serves as a permanent exhibition. The Queen has visited many times, observed the drawings, and followed the progress. She praises this beautiful, weather-resistant place. -
Giske Kirke - Driving time: 10 minutes
GISKE is known as Norway’s birthplace.
It was home to one of Norway’s most powerful families, the Giske family, who were influential for many centuries. Four brothers from the Giske family were among the king of Norway’s men, closely following the king. Giske medieval church was built in 1130 as a family chapel for the powerful Giske family, descendants of Torberg Arnason. His daughter Tora became Queen of Norway. The church seats approximately 130 people and is the oldest church in this part of Norway, nearly 900 years old. It is the only church in Norway made entirely of marble, sourced from other parts of Norway and Italy. The architecture was inspired by European church buildings. Small crosses were carved on the outer walls around 1300 by pilgrims on special days, which are still visible today. -
Giske Municipality - Driving time: 5 minutes
Stop to see the 3,300-year-old historical burial mound.
This is a unique site in Norway. -
