- Leiden - Known as a city of discoveries, Leiden is a 17th-century city and the birthplace of Rembrandt. It remains largely preserved, featuring numerous canals, charming bridges, quaint squares, floating terraces, and many courtyards, making it perfect for walking tours.
- Young Rembrandt Studio - The Rembrandt studio is where Rembrandt van Rijn, one of the Netherlands’ most renowned painters, was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden. He spent his early years here, and his family had resided in the city for two generations, according to historical records.
- Hortus Botanicus Leiden - The Hortus Botanicus is the green plant treasury of Leiden University. For over four centuries, plants from around the globe have been collected, cultivated, admired, and studied in its beautiful gardens and greenhouses.
Since 1590, the Hortus Botanicus has served as the study garden for Leiden University. The Clusius Garden, named after its founder Carolus Clusius, replicates the original layout. Four centuries of collecting, nurturing, and studying have resulted in a stunning garden with a variety of exotic and rare plants. The special gardens and greenhouses, including the Japanese garden and the Victoria greenhouse, are worth visiting. Upon exiting the garden, turn right to reach the Academy Building.
- Leiden University Academic Building - The Academy Building is the oldest structure in Leiden. Initially, it was a church belonging to a monastery established in 1447. The first university in the Netherlands was founded here in 1575, and the chapel of the then-vacant church was renovated for this purpose. Today, approximately 30,000 students attend the university, and this building is still used for ceremonial events. Fun fact: most members of the royal family studied at the University of Leiden.
- Rijksmonument Jean Pesijnhofje Leiden - The Jean Pesijnshofje is one of Leiden’s most beautiful courtyards. From 1611 to 1625, preacher John Robinson lived here with about twenty English families. In 1620, his followers departed for America as pilgrims. The location is also known as the ‘English Gate.’ In 1683, Marie de Lannoy, the widow of Jean Pesijn, established a courtyard for elderly members of the Walloon Reformed Church. Visitors are welcome to enter and enjoy the courtyard, provided they respect the residents’ privacy and maintain silence.
- Pieterskerk Leiden - The Pieterskerk is a late Gothic church constructed from sandstone. Building began in 1390 and was completed in 1565. Originally, a chapel from 1121 stood here, later replaced by a church dedicated to Saint Peter. Both the interior and facade of this oldest church in Leiden hold significant monumental value. The church houses around thirty gravestones and memorial plaques of famous artists, notable figures, and wealthy individuals.
- Molen de Put - Flour mill De Put is one of the 46 remaining standard mills in the Netherlands and is a replica of the 1619 mill that once stood on this site. After a barracks was demolished, the old foundations of the mill and the stronghold were uncovered in 1987, leading to the mill’s reconstruction. It is said that Rembrandt’s parents operated their mill here.
