Organized, fun and authentic! - Wow what an amazing experience! From the time I booked the tour the team was super helpful in helping me get from Medan to Bukit Lawang, arranging a room and answering any questions I had. As someone who has never been to Indonesia and just going off of word of mouth it was very overwhelming trying to plan but they made it super easy. As for the trek itself, it was incredible. We saw orangutans in the first hour of our hike. My guide, Ponidi (Pablo) was fabulous. His knowledge of the area and respect for wildlife gave the tour an authentic feel and his passion for the jungle was contagious. His English was also very good and he was super personable. His assistant guide, Nata, took some turns leading the trip and did a great job keeping the pace even for everyone and kept us entertained the whole time, always keeping everyone laughing. Our chef also made the best food every night. When the tour was over the team went above and beyond by still helping me with my travel plans. I felt well taken care of and got to expierence the raw untouched magic of the jungle in safe, knowledgable hands! Thanks again to the whole team for a great experience.

It has to be SOT if you’re looking to book. 10/10 to all staff from start to finish! Safe, respectful and ethical🦧 - It has to be this company if you are looking to book! One of the best and most memorable experiences you will ever have. Respectable, ethical and safe. From start to finish the team were 10/10. Dedek was fast to reply, laid everything thing out perfectly regarding costs and was a huge help with in and outbound travel. We had a nice surprise of meeting Dedek in the jungle too. When we arrived, my partner and I were welcomed with open arms to beautiful Bukit Lawang. All of the staff at Sumatra Orangutan Trekking are amazing, smiley and very friendly people. On the first day of the trek, Brema and Nata, our guides, gave us a detailed brief and explained how the trek will run. After a lovely breakfast overlooking the river and a morning march of Long Tailed Macaques, we headed down through the town and began our trek up into the jungle. Within 10 minutes, we were lucky enough to have a very close encounter with Thomas Leaf monkeys, Long Tailed Macaques and a White Gibbon. Fast forward another 15 minutes and had our first encounter with a semi-wild orangutan and her baby up in the canopy above. Brema and Nata urged us to take our time and enjoy, which we did😊🦧 Before reaching camp at around 4pm, we had further encounters with the wild alpha male and many other fauna in the jungle, but no snakes! We even saw a Hornbill in flight and listened to Brema chat back and forth to the Hornbill. The camp was what you should expect signing up to a 3 day jungle trek. We washed in the river, we slept under cover and mosquito net alongside the river, and ate delicious food cooked by Ekong. Day two began with a hefty uphill climb before a rest at the top. During day two we saw more orangutans and plenty more monkeys with some very close encounters, though it is paramount a safe distance is respected. We even got to see the black gibbon! After reaching camp at around 3pm, we had a lovely swim in the river, in a rainforest downpour. We watched the fog roll across the rainforest. Pretty special and memorable moment for me. Day 3 began with delicious breakfast, a swim in a nearby waterfall and jungle makeup drawn on by Nata and Ekong. After our swim, we decided to head back to town early so we had time to explore the town. Brema, Nata, Ekong, the other guest and my partner and I, rafted back down the river on tubes for around 20 minutes before reaching camp for a welcome drink back and some delicious lunch. We cannot thank you the team at Sumatra Orangutan Trekking enough for creating one of the most memorable experiences of our lives. Jingle bells will never, ever be the same for us!! Jungle trek, jungle trek, in Bukit Lawang, see the monkey, see the bird, see orangutan!!!

DO NOT MISS - Wowee, what an experience! First off the guides are extremely knowledgeable, laid back and smiliey. On our 3 day trek we had Brema and Nata to lead us on our tour. We also had Ekong who provided us with a tasty range on dishes each night, we were well feed by our jungle mama to say the least. Next up, the wildlife, we were incredibly lucky during our trip, and saw 5 different types on monkey species, the black squirrel, a hornbill bird and of 7 orangutans, 2 of which were babies and one was the alpha male! We kept distance from all of the animals that we encountered and we were urged to stay as long as we wanted to watch them. Because we were keeping distance this tour felt very natural and respectable to the animals which is something I really liked. On day 1 we reached camp at 4pm and day two we got to camp at 2pm. We washed in the river and waterfalls when we reached camp. At camp there was always a toilet to use. We had dinners together and even got magic tricks every night by Nata! Day 3 included a waterfall, jungle makeup and then a 20/40 minute rafting ride back to Bukit Lawang. This trip could not be better if it would have tried. Breama, Nata and Ekong really helped to make our time special and we thank them for everything.

Once in a lifetime! - Amazing, amazing experience! We saw so many different types of monkeys, and of course, orangutans! The tour was perfectly organized and the team were very friendly and knowledgeable, and looked after us. I always felt safe. And we had so much fun in the evenings at dinner - great food, playing games, telling stories, and getting to know each other. Even outside of the trip, the team went over and above to help us enjoy our trip.

Amazing jungle hike and perfect service! - Before i get into details, the biggest thanks to the Manager Dedek, who helped me a lot before, under and after my stay. A message on WhatsApp and my issues disappeared! A really unexpected level of service. With that said, I did the 3 day 2 night jungle hike and was blown away! My guides by name Brema (17 years of experience) and Nata were great at their job. A lot of knowledge was passed on under the way and they spotted things I never would have seen by myself!. We saw a lot of Orangutangs, Thomas leave monkeys, Macacs, Gibbons and so on. We slept at two different campsites, where Ekong (the cook) prepared an absolutely stunning dinner. During the day Brema and Nata prepared delicious dinner and fruit breaks. Also they were very entertaining with their sunny personalities, so there were a lot of funny stories and laughter in the air. So my biggest recommendation goes to this company and the way they do it. Deserves everybody's support!

3-day solo jungle trek - The whole experience was amazing. Besides seeing a lot of animals the tour was also perfectly organized. The tour guides were amazing, food was great and views were beautiful. The guides look after you so greatly and also have much knowledge about the jungle. Communication with the organization was also perfect, quick responses and always kind! Would definitely recommend this.

best tour ever <3 - Me and my friend took the 3D2N tour and it was an amazing experience!! We saw 6 orangutans, thomas leaf monkeys, gibbons, pigtail monkeys, hornbills and sooo much cool plants. We went during low season, which means it can rain a bit more (but we got super lucky), but it’s also less busy in the jungle - so i would actually recommend low season. The hike can sometimes be quite challenging, but our guides helped us with everything, they were so kind and knowledgeable! On the last day you tube back to town, which is super fun :) The camping was pretty nice and the food was amaaaazing, big shout out to our cook Poda <3 Also big shout out to our guides Ibnu & Nataa you guys were so manis and fun - thank you guys for protecting us from all the cheeky monkeys haha! We’ll miss you guys <3

i made the right choice - I can only be positive. From the first contact (the booking was in December) to the return to the airport. I could not have wished for a better guide, Brema and his assistant showed us everything we wanted to see. Brema tells us everything about the different animals, but we also stop regularly to learn something about the jungle itself. We can take all the time and enjoy these beautiful animals/nature. The camp is basic but you forget that because of the surroundings and the delicious food that our chef makes. Because of this experience I would go again. The friendliness and how they deal with the jungle has only surprised me positively.

Worth the experience, but improvements needed - Overall we had a nice time in the national park and saw orangutans on 3 occasions, it was a very special experience. We also want to thank all the guys who helped us with our bags and had great energy, they were all so nice and eager to help! Also to Dedek who made coming to Sumatra and planning the trek so easy, answering WhatsApp questions immediately. However, I'm sorry to say the trek itself was a bit underwhelming. Speaking as someone who has lived in the Amazon for 6 months and guided tours myself, I thought the knowledge of the forest and the plants and animals was lacking in our guide Andra. I gave up asking questions because he seemed fed up with them and had no answers for me. I would expect a guide to engage more with what is around, sounds we are hearing, some plant knowledge and interesting facts or stories about the forest and its animals. We also want to note that the tent situation was a bit of a shock, there was a rat getting into our bed/mosquito net, basically getting trapped in it with us, and not just us but the other tourist on the trek too, it was a sleepless night to say the least. Our guide kept saying welcome to the jungle, but I've never experienced rats in 6 whole months of living in jungle accommodation. I will say that I think all companies use the same tents, it might be worth researching. Lastly, we would suggest going for the 2 day/1 night option, as there didn't seem the need for the 3rd day, we didn't do any trekking, the guide was very hesitant to do another trek, saying that we could walk for 2 hours but we won't find anything and that it's best to just stay around camp. When we convinced him we'd like some hiking he said he'd bring us 1 hour up the river and we can jungle taxi back from there, we were happy enough with that, but the trail was not even through the jungle where we might find monkeys or apes, it was an actual path on private land across the river, and ended up being just 20 minutes walk. So we were a bit disappointed about the 3rd day, especially after the night spent in the bad accommodation, there was absolutely no reason to stay a 2nd night. We would still recommend this company, Bukit Lewang is a beautiful place and we are greatful for our time with the Orangutans.

Good tour, bad stay before. - The jungle trekking itself with this organization is great, i would do it immediately again. Still only three stars because we stayed with the organization in their Hotel/Hostel already two nights before the tour to look arround the town ourselves. This I would not recommend: stay somewhere else! Room was moldy, bed had very strong and moldy smell. Breakfast was included, but very little and disappointing. (The food during the tour was great, though). So: book the tour, but stay the night before and after somewhere else ;-)
